metroland community newspaper wednesday april 19 1989 pitching rivals now midget teammates by bruce stapley howard burkholder believes that if you cant beat him join him or at least get him on your own team so burkholder the towns sports personality of the year in 1987 for his part in leading the towns bantam rep softball team to the allontario champion ships has secured longtime rival byron baroneski for his whitchurchstouffville midget rep squad baroneski who lives on the st johns sideroad had thrown his fastball for aurora and newmarket teams in the past and it was a common sight to see him locked up in a pitching battle with stouffville ace scott evans were bringing the archrival to our team smiles burkholder byron and scott have had some great pitching duels now they are together so confident is burkholder about what such a dazzling duo will mean to the team that he has entered the outfit in the scar borough junior league despite the fact they are a midgetlevel team but he feels the move will help prepare his unit for the rigors of the provincial cham pionships which he feels they are more than capable of winning were moving up a notch but we are mostly a secondyear midget team there will be better competition at the junior level and weve got two of the best pit chers in the province now burkholder felt it was essential to have another pitching ace to go with evans who will be trying out for the canadian team that will play in the world youth games this summer evans has already secured a spot on the ontario team that will compete in the canadian sum mer games in saskatchewan this summer if he should make the canadian squad he would be unavailable for the allontario playoffs in which burkholders midgets will be competing the ju ly l weekend thats why we got byron says burkholder i had to have another pitcher for that tourna ment in case evans makes the canadian team and burkholder is already looking beyond the provincial ti tle the winner of the all- ontario championship will go to victoria bc for the canadian championship thats exciting thats what were aiming for burkholder says his team will also play in a few mens tour naments to help them prepare for the provincials he feels he will have a well- rounded club as most of his players are back from last years team there will be some new players as well but it looks like well have most of the guys back returnees will include rich and chris burkholder jamie showers rob blundon rob parcells dan larmer dan bell pete fintelman blair steel and perhaps jason and brett yoshida burkholder is mindful of the fact his team was not always on top of its game last season the year after most of the players had won the allontario title as a bantam squad we were incon sistent last season i hope to turn that around this year the big thing is attitude and well have the best pitching of any midget team in ontario burkholder is hopeful of enlisting the coaching assistance of don reesor reesor is no stranger to provincial champion ships as his whitchurch- stouffville rep atom hockey team took the ontario title in the 198788 season gary yoshida who assisted burkholder last season may also return this year home games are expected to be played on thursday evenings at 830 pm anyone who would like to try out for the team is ask ed to contact howard burkholder at 8881795 team is at a great disadvantage due to its not having a proper track to train on and must risk turned ankles working out on the grass sports in brief by bruce stapley don clearwater the fresh- faced cleancutlooking 19-year- old grade 13 student at stouff ville district secondary school is up front when it comes to what drives him on a volleyball or basketball court im a very competitive per son says clearwater who was designated best male athlete at sdss for the 198788 school year i like to win and i dont like to lose it was that competitive in stinct he claims that made win ners of the schools senior boys volleyball team this year at the durhamyork championships but it was a disappointment not to advance further at the all- ontario the others dont like to lose either they all love to play volleyball five of us went to the madawaska volleyball camp the last week of august last summer thais how much we wanted to play well we lost at the durhamyork finals last year even though we won the york regional cham pionship this year we didnt know if we would win at dyssa we won but we should have done better at the allontarios there were a couple of teams we should have beaten but we got some bad breaks most observers agreed however that the spartans with clearwaters awesome power hit ting one of their key weapons had every reason to be pleased with their season and while the sdss spartans basketball team never really got untracked this past season clearwater was dominant gain ing momentum as the campaign progressed he racked up 27 points in his seasonhigh contest and showed the form that saw him earn the mvp award for the 198788 senior cagers we were drained from volleyball says clearwater in speaking of the spartans poor showing on the court this year raequel beecher allontario finals there was no time to prepare for basketball most of the volleyball players were mainstays on the basketball squad as well in clearwaters other sport track and field he is as of yet un- proven he broke a foot playing intramural bucketball last spring and was unable to compete at track and field the rangy athlete came to stouffville from ottawa at the start of the 87- 88 school year as a child in ottawa he recalls being involved in sports almost non stop but it wasnt until he got to grade 9 that he started to achieve any kind of success i was into football and basketball in grade 9 and as a kid i loved playing sports but my coordination didnt come until grade 9 clearwater will give track and field another try this spring i didnt enter the indoor track pro gram because i was involved with the schools badminton team but ill enter the outdoor track program in the long jump clearwater is hopeful his pro wess on the volleyball court will lead to his enjoying a successful university volleyball career he has applied for admission to york university they have the third- ranked volleyball team in canada i considered applying to an american university but i was too slow in getting the ball rolling maybe after a year in university in canada ill apply as for his academic field he is playing it safe taking a variety of subjects im taking math english physics biology i want to keep it open for next year clearwater admits he doesnt really know which way his life will go careerwise after he is finished school but is hopeful he will be able to land something that is sportsrelated ill probably end up doing something to do withsports because i love it so much theres sports management ad ministration at the allontario level phys ed advisory positions etc while he is reluctant to discuss it he is aware of his candidacy for a second best male athlete award this year id love to win it again but i dont like to say too much about it clearwater cant say enough about the schools support for its sports teams they are great they are really behind you hes also appreciative of the work of his coaches especially jim fletcher who guided both the volleyball and basketball teams hes really involved not many teachers would give up their time the way he does even weekends and hed always leave it up to us whether or not to enter tournaments but hed like to see some im provements to the schools facilities its hard to get prac tice time for our teams and back in ottawa every school has a track i feel bad for the runners here who have to run on the grass you can turn an ankle so easily a running track would be a benefit to the whole town the public schools could hold their track meets there when hes not studying at school or playing sports clear water can be found at his part- time job at upper canada post and beam at ringwood where he drives a forklift and moves lumber around it keeps me in shape he is just starting on a condi tioning program that he hopes will have him in top shape for volleyball next fall and he plans to play coed volleyball with a group of stouffville and marknam teams this summer angela white rai 2i for 200 lengthi proof
