hawks given a bad name r thank you its been a great year judy maclachlandow german mills ps is just one of the many excellent teachers ready to serve the students of york region ready for 1989 the york region board of education harry bowes chairman ra cressman director of education by art briggsjude theres something about a rap tor that brings out the worst in most of us if its a fish hawk like the osprey for example were almost mesmerized by the breathtaking plunge as it retrieves a hitherto unseen fish from a nearby lake on the other hand our appreciation of these avian predators is soured if its a sharpshinned hawk capturing our backyard feathered visitors i guess in some ways we just refuse to accept reality while in others we simply reject the real facts all too often raptors like rep tiles are the victims of legend and an inherited apprehension because eagles are carrion eaters and were frequently seen feeding on dead livestock and deer they were immediately branded as these animals killers it mattered little to the rancher or hunter that the animal had died from some other cause to them the eagle was the culprit to be reckoned with the stories of sinbad the sailor being lofted into the sky in the grasp of a giant bird did not lessen the fears of the early set tlers even today some people cl ing to the belief that young children are possible victims of eagles and vultures to offset such fallacies one only has to look at the true dimensions of these the largest birds of prey while our two north american species of eagle the bald and the golden soar around on wings that span close to seven feet their in dividual body weight averages less than 13 pounds it would take a special steroid diet to allow these huge birds to lift and carry away a victim weighing more than their own body weight the slightly smaller turkey sears portrait hvdk january portrait sate now with the purchase of our 20pfoto portrait package get a pftee vm3 wall portrait regularly priced ot 25 act now save an extra 2 vulture or buzzard as they are sometimes called is even more restricted with a body weight of only 3 2 pounds these giant black birds have even less of a load- lifting capacity add to this han dicap a pair of feet that are in capable of carrying anything and you begin to separate the fact from the fantasy theres more fancy than fact too when we delve into the lifestyles of the soaring hawks or buteos often mistakenly called chicken hawks these raptors in reality are small rodent cat chers destroying countless mice rats and other such animals each year it is interesting to note that while all of our chickens and ducks are freeranging we have never lost a single bird to a red- tailed hawk in over seven years of homesteading this record is even more meaningful when you know that a pair of redtailed hawks nest each summer on the nearby ridge only a few hundred yards from our barns of course there are some hawks tht prey on poultry goshawks and coopers hawks are some such species as well as marsh hawks which are now called harriers yet even the depredations by these accipiters on our chickens and young ducks can be counted on half the fingers on one hand as these hawks also nest in our vicinity it seems safe to say that their attacks on domestic poultry are grossly overstated the isolated instance of any hawk taking a chicken should not label all hawks as chicken hawks to be shot on sight this fact has long been recognized by an amendment to the game and fish act in 1962 that stated hawks kingfishers and owls were no longer allowed to be shot in defence or preserva tion of property yet if you think old ideas and beliefs die hard youre right witness the charges laid this summer against the jack miner sanctuary near kingsville and the recent discovery at the kor- r tright wildfowl park in guelph i both establishments were caught using leghold traps on poles to catch socalled marauding hawks and owls seems the bottom line shows theres a lot of learning to be done by a lot of people about raptors and their ways even today 5 frei 1013 i wall portrait regularly priced at 25 wlfhpurchaiofour20plte portrait
