avenue stouffville artist preserves town landmarks by jim thomas uxbridgii celia ledrew has a way of preserving land marks long after landmarks have disappeared shes doing it through beautiful works of art some from photos some from sketches and yes some from memory beginning monday may 9 and extending over a period of three weeks mrs ledrew will have many of her paintings on display in the uxbridge public library its her first exhibition a native of louisbourg cape breton island mrs ledrew moved to uxbridge in 1946 and im mediately fell in love with the town and surrounding area i have a feeling for the coun tryside she says i always look at everything twice proof of this is in her paintings her visual perceptions are passed on through her brush with detail that both natives and newcomers appreciate mrs ledrew was a charter member of the uxbridge art club that started back in 1950 arnold hodgkins of leaskdale was their teacher they first met in an upstairs studio on brock street then in the basement of the anglican church and later at the high school now mrs ledrew works out of a studio in the basement of her home association with the descrip tive professional raises her eyebrows its still a hobby she insists she modestly admits however to being proud of her work her favorite the bell tower she replies without hesitation people came from all over to paint it it growth of york re gion is evident everywhere we turn together with the good things growth brings comes increased requirements for human ser vices in 1982 twentyfive agencies asked the united way for 556000 in 1987 thirtyone agencies re quested york region united way for almost two million dollars to ensure the united way main tains its regional responsibilities it has grown also in 1987 over 5000 volunteer hours went into the very successful campaign anticipating even morere- quests for more funding for more agencies the 88 york region un ited way campaign has com menced planning for the current year the campaign goal will be de termined in late summer howev er its safe to say york region will probably be the 19th largest united campaign in all canada i have accepted the challenging chore of serving as campaign chairman in reviewing our scrapbookbf 1987 press clippings its evident we receive tremendous support from the news media i wish to repeat the united way presi dents thanks
