p5s weekendkrn0tveaibee28 1387 j stouffville falls short in finals by alan shackleton wait until next year its all stouffville district secondary school sdss senior spartans boys volleyball coach jim fletcher can say after his squad came within one point of going to the allontario cham pionships the spartans finished third at tuesdays durhamyork secon dary school athletic association dyssaa championships with six points the two top teams pickering and thornlea tied for first with seven points advanced to the provincial finals we beat both pickering and thornlea during the season but those two teams get to go to the allontarios fletcher said the dyssaa championships were a roundrobin tourney at kthornlea featuring thetop squads from york and durham regions sdss the york champions played port perry thornlea pickering bayview and osha- was anderson winning six of their 10 games the contest the spartans would most like back and the one that will probably keep coach fletcher awake at night was their first matchup against thornlea in which they blew a 1410 lead the spartans were one point from victory but ended up losing 1614 a point was awarded for each game won at the cham pionships so a win over thornlea would have sent sdss to the pro vincials we missed it by one point and it was the first thornlea game that cost us fletcher said inspired by the comeback thornlea went on to beat the stun- ned spartan side 158 in the second game fletcher believes those were two games sdss should have won the spartans split their games with pickering 152 1315 which only added to the coachs frustra tion we lost we should be going to the allontarios but were not he said in their other dyssaa con tests sdss topped anderson 155 155 knocked off bayview 1512 159 and split with port perry 12- 15 150 sdss had the best point dif ferential difference between points scored and points allowed at the tournament injuries have hampered the spartans all season and tuesday was no exception they are still without the services of captain scott rehill out with a knee in jury and topshooter guy cowan was suffering from the flu and a 104degree temperature at game time though he tried to tough it out as best he could the rest of the team picked up the slack well especially joel fletcher joel was our most con sistent hitter on the day coach fletcher said despite the disappointment of not making the ontario cham pionships there is great optim ism for next season he added im looking forward to next year i think well definitely go to the allontarios fletcher said were a young team and almost everybody will be back youll be hearing a lot more about this team in the future it was great season and next year will be even better i believe we have a chance to be one of the top 10 teams in the province next year special cheque a special presentation was made at the recent markham mens recreational hockey league john bulnes awards night the league presented cheques to mark
