and a collec tion of some of the most original works of folk art and country crafts to be found this side of the american border indeed there were hints of new england to be found everywhere the grand event was pat beatons fifteenth annual christmas craft show held at the beaton property in sand ford and as is always the case they were waiting when the wooden open sign was hung outside the door at 10 am last wednesday morning well usually have about 1000 people pass through for the sale says mrs beaton who along with husband graham and their two teen aged chil dren is the creative force be hind what has become a thriv ing home made craft business called the gooseberry patch the little shop as well as the entire house was overflowing with an infinite variety of folk art animals baskets full of herbs and spices traditional christmas decorations and end less other delights the kitchen invited guests with the old fashioned aroma of hot cider and coffee even the wind driven snow against the window panes contributed to the authentic old time hominess that was in evidence throughout the house for the 14 ladies serving as hostesses and cashiers it was a labour of love many of them make the annual trek from as far away as barrie just so they can be a part of the special day some brought crafts of their own to add to those made by mrs beaton dorothy duggan of uxbridge set up shop in the downstairs family room paint ing names on miniature wooden mailboxes for interested cus tomers its certainly not your aver age commercial sale agreed mrs beaton we really try to create a homey atmosphere with cider coffee- and an over all casual approach the regulars those who have been coming since mrs beaton held her first sale in lemonville 15 years ago were out in full force newcomers were more than a little bit impressed with the selection and overall quality of the crafts being sold this shop is just as nice as anything we have in unionville was the remark made by a man who lives in the town with the old fashioned main street this is the third year the annual christmas exhibition has been held at the sandford location mrs beaton originally set up shop over the garage of the house in lemonville calling it pattis attic husband gra ham would furnish the wooden cutouts and parts required and mrs beaton then applied her artists touch to transform then into new england style folk art pieces the move to sandford allowed for a separate workshop- showroom apart from the house normally customers are directed to that part of the property for browsing and pur chasing but for the annual show and sale the whole house is needed to handle both the extra stock and the crowds of people we start going flat out in september in preparation for the show says mrs beaton and were always running around til all hours the night before putting on the finishing touches for the people walking out of the shop with mouse tail book markers quilted christmas tree skirts and teadyed folk angels they were happy to have been able to share in the result of mrs beatons efforts pat beaton pictured along with husband graham and their two teenage children is the driving force behind what has become a thriving home craft business called the gooseberry patch jim thomas no objections voiced about expansion of cobra building mario sangallis proposal to en large his cobra stove building firm on hwy47 near goodwood met with no objections at a recent meeting mr sangalli operator of the business with sons john and dario hopes to eventually close his operation in markham and move the stove and fireplace in sert manufacturing business to the goodwood area according to dario the 3000 square foot building in markham is too small to accommodate the operation and while the cobra structure is also about 3000 square feet mr sangalli says theyre considering adding a major addition ranging from 8000 to 17000 square feet before this can be done township council must approve a rezoning of the property from ru ral to special rural industrial dario says four family mem bers now work at the markham location but an expanded good- wood site could employ as many as 15 however mr sangalli must agree that a house on the property remain under the same own ership as the industry ward 3 councillor harry wors- ley feels locating the industry in an area already zoned industrial is appropriate while ward 1 councillor cal avery says hes already received two complaints from residents concerned about development have your say v 9s v- r vj marietta georgiadis ii wouldnt want to live by a
