stevensons stouffville campaign headquar ters thursday night and later accepted news of the pc incum bents loss in the riding of durhamyork despite the fact early returns indicated liberal candidate bill ballinger to be holding substan tial leads in many polls backers of mr stevenson remained un daunted refusing to accept de feat as long as were close going into the far turn weve still got a chance said one optimistic sup porter however such was not to be as polling stations at the ballantrae community centre and the stouffville sales barn backed ballinger strongly mr stevenson secured a marginal lead at pre stons lake and while counting on uxbridge to pull the progressive conserva tive candidate into at least a tie mr ballinger in turn showed sur prising strength in other areas although emotions were sup- ressed and few opinions express ed some were heard to remark on the surprising support accorded candidate ken canning of the family coalition one person sug gested that the
