different last year she said we wanted to do something specifically for our community and we decided to help the mar kham stouffville hospital we opened a bank account and put some money in from the garage sale wed like to do something for the childrens ward although community service is a large part of their mandate bbw also make a concerted effort to raise public awareness of the jewish identity in markham says ellen before i moved here six years ago some of my neighbors had never met a jew she explains i show them im the same as they are except im a jew i share my food with them i talk with them its like being an ambassador she says the women also work with elementary schools in the area to teach jewish culture to the pupils for example we go to schools and explain what the jewish holidays are at one school the students did a channauka pro ject it teaches the children toler ance and respect she says then if they hear something de rogatory at home about jews theyll have a better understand ing she suggests it also helps the children of bbw members she adds it makes them comfortable that their friends know about their holidays she says women have a variety of reasons for joining the group the jewish population in mar kham is very spread out and there can be a feeling of aloneness says ellen she says its a good feeling just to know there are other people around who are the same as you other people join for the social benefits its just another time to have social contact says ellen we meet every second wednesday at a members house and we have a lot of fun there are speakers once a month who discuss anything from wife abuse to astrology other meetings are devoted to the busi ness of running the chapter she says one piece of business has been especially heartening to the chap ter this year they sponsored a refusnik woman galina yash- chin is a russian engineer who has applied and been redused the right to emigrate to israel her husband was first demoted and then fired from his job as a physi cist for asking to leave hopefully our members will write to her says ellen the chapter pays for the galihas annual membership fee so that she may receive the organiza tions newsletters and magazines for more than 10 years bnai brith women has been convenor of the womens plea for soviet jews and human rights the national organization is commit ted to working for human rights it speaks for its members before parliament and the united na tions bbw is involved in issues such as pay equity the peace movement and wife abuse but at the local level mar khams bbw are devoted to com munity service we want to become better known in this town says ellen
