p4weekenderauesti weekender comment bullock decision disturbs an ontario supreme court deci sion on the bullock dr extension contains some disturbing ele ments although we favor the exten sion as a badly needed eastwest connecting link between mcco- wan rd and hwy 48 the courts decision could lead to the in solvency of the markham herit age area ratepayers associa tion if the court awards thousands of dollars in damages to the town as will likely happen after the re cent decision the ratepayers group would probably fold yet what was the crime the ratepayers dared to challenge the town of markham in court the whole incident will put a damper on other ratepayer groups initiat ing court action its a shame that the courts would deal with the ratepayers so harshly if costs and damages are awarded we suggest the town of markham refuse to accept the money in one decision the courts may have wiped out one of the oldest and most viable of these groups don bernard this misfits going back to pine a futile twoyear search for em ployment of a modestly satisfying nature has led me to a conclusion that was really quite obvious all along once the heart of a man starts beating to an entrepreneu rial tune it is extremely difficult to adapt to the rhythm of another mans drum you see a taste of independ ence in the workplace can be a dangerous thing it can cause a person to give up the pursuit of the safe pay cheque regular work hours weekends off and holidays spent without worrying about how the company is ever going to get along without you yes for some entrepreneurs independence can bring with it the irony of being not far removed from slavery but thats the negative side of self employment the potential benefits make it very much worth the risk provided you are work ing with a game plan that is com prised of the proper preparation by way of learning your trade along with a willingness to engage from where i live jdulcz jbtahlzxj m in some good old fashioned hard work you stand to carve out a worthwhile niche of fulfilling satisfaction and adequate finan cial reward stouffvilles reknowned com mercial sign painter jim brazier symbolizes to me the independ ence brought about by the true en trepreneurial spirit working out of a basement shop jims services are very much in demand he paints ev erything from sale banners for local businesses right through the ads that will decorate the boards for next months canada cup international hockey tourna ment always up to his eyeballs with work orders jim refuses to suc cumb to the pressure his answer to pestering questions from fraz zled customers wanting to know when their signs will be ready is always the same theyll be ready when theyre ready so re lax and invariably the work is done before deadline yet he still finds time to get away to the cottage most summer weekends play three or four games of ball with the boys on monday nights and take off skiing several times each winter and you just cant help but admire a guy who will walk into the executive offices of mcneil laboratories in his paint spotted shorts and running shoes to talk business with the company brass in their threepiece suits jim has paid his dues has no one but himself to answer to and insists on living life one day at a time he may work some long hours sometimes seven days a week but he is his own man in every way and that is reflected by a personality that is at once confident engaging and vibrant now then having digressed almost entirely from the idea with which i started your saturday morning throne seat read it would probably be best to go back and pick up at the beginning something about two years of frustration as i tried in vain to find happiness working in another mans yoke after running my own show for most of the previous 18 years sort of like trying to make a silk purse out of a sows ear for two years ive watched bosses look at mc shaking their heads in both amusement and dis belief as i attempted to assimi late their idea of how a business should be run the one thing i did learn is that the old saying is quite correct that speaks of the boss not always being right but that he is always the boss so thats it no more bosses for this misfit the big decision has been made its time to dust off the tools and start once again to recreate the pine furniture of our forefathers after all ive always been ab out a hundred years behind the times so why not use it to my advantage it worked for me be fore a few years back so why not give it another whack and in true paul rimstead fashion im announcing it in my column the rimmer was never above plugging his sideline pur suits in print why should i be any different so look me up and come on by for a visit i take my coffee regu lar jjconomistsun the tribune weekender bruce annan publisher 9 heritage rd markham l3p1m3 2942200 4959440 6402100 6492292 published every saturday by metroland printing publishing and
