3 v i3cfitvf ii seniors plan put on hold by steve houston staff reporter a 142acre senior citizens com munity plan to house some 1500 residents in north markham is a wee bit premature in light of the towns draft official plan says regional councillor ron moran and markham planning com mittee says a complete review of land uses in the area will have to be done before any projects can be considered the proposal by swan lake vil lage inc to build the community around an abandoned quarry north of 16th ave near 9th line is contained in a study area the town has frozen development on markham council voted earlier this year to maintain the entire parcel known as mount joy as a study area after demands from area residents during the towns official plan review residents balked at a prelimin ary industrial designation of the land during public hearings and feared such development beside area homes though planning committee generally favored the seniors community project tuesday members said they are commit ted to neighboring residents about preserving the study area status following the presentation from swan lake representative brad warren members agreed to make the proposal public during upcoming official plan hearings to gauge reaction its time we started looking at proposals such as this very seriously said unionville coun cillor fred cox its a convenient location and its well buffered i think the people of markham- would probably see it as prog ress for the community a detailed sketch of the plan shows several features of the nieghborhood including a nine- hole golf course surrounding the eastern perimeter a recreation centre shops and a 175unit nurs ing residence mr warren said canadas ag ing population dictates a serious need for seniors development projects in an interview he said swan lake village would be operated on a condominium basis leaving maintenance and other services to trained personnel but a complete studyof the area likely wont commence until the towns new official plan is approved by the provincial gov ernment only then can an amendment be made to the plan to give swan lake the green light mayor bell said residents who opposed the possibility of indust rial development on the mount joy site may be more receptive to this type of development i would like to know what peo ple think she noted at the meet ing they may very well wel come something like this if we can put the proper controls in this artists rendering shows the proposed swan lake development for 16th ave and 9th line no decision can be made on the project until the
