walking along the shore line of sibbalds point july 12 my 19yearold sister and four of her friends came across a young boy sitting on the beach pleading mercilessly for help the little lads brothers had gone too far out into the water and were drowning prior to coras inadvertent arrival the boys efforts to con vince nearby adults of the urgen cy of the situation had failed not because they didnt hear but be cause they didnt care the short of the story is that cora and her friends did care and managed to save the lives of two of the drowning boys the third died in sick childrens hospital the next day notwithstanding the tragic death of a young child what i find morally devastating is the utter helplessness of a boy away from the security of his parents unable to swim totally dependent on the intervention of others but dis gracefully ignored by members of the adult world some will say that it is invari ably perilous to rescue a drown ing person if you are not a durable swimmer others will remind you of the legal ramifications of im properly performed artificial re spiration i ask is it too much to find a telephone and call for help or to beckon the assistance of others cora and her friends were not immediately alarmed by the boys pleading because there was a man not more than five feet away serenely fishing as she approached the desper ate cries persisted compelling her to ask the man to explain he did all i know is that theres been a kid out in the water bob bing for awhile now he replied when my sister and her friends pulled two drowning boys from the water spectators gathered around and confirmed the seriousness of the matter and the fisherman made a surreptitious exit disgusted with the abhorent complacency of the onlookers one of coras friends had to inter rupt his efforts in reviving a child to locate a telephone because not one of the spectators would help how can the child on the beach ever look up to adults with any thing but disdain how can we expect him to value the imature world of which he will one day be a part or to re spect any of the necessary obliga tions inherent in the preservation of a civil society like it or not for one little boy we are all imputed in the decadent letsomebodyelsedoit attitude of those repugnant onlookers while im consoled by the efforts of cora laurie andrea paul and mike i fear the real damage of this incident exceeds the tragic death of one little boy sean ryan rr 4 stouffville tribune august 5 1987 a9 married at melville mr and mrs rick jackson are pictured here following their marriage saturday in
