a first hand look at their royal homes tead the ontario youth concert band just returned home from a month long european tour highlighted by a performance at buck ingham palace former markham district high school student and trumpet player for the band andrew emig said it was quite a thrill to perform in the london castle for royalty well it was bigger than my house he joked although you hear so much about it it seemed smaller than i imagined still it was fantastic the ontario youth concert band is a prestigious assembly of musical talent once every two years auditions are held across the province for 50 to 60 spots successful candidates are chosen for a european tour three markham area residents were part of the troup sue fow ler dan weins and mr emig all from markham district high school auditions are held every other christmas and musicians re hearse only two weeks before the tour after coming home the band disbands for two years then try outs begin all over again this years tour covered england france germany switzer land and austria in england the palace performance was attended by the queen mother prince edward and prince harry among other digni taries mr emig said the queen mother was very receptive to the music very receptive to canada and young people in general they were served a meal while they were there when asked if the food was good he replied well it certainly wasnt mcdo nalds while travelling they stayed in hotels or sometimes with local families mr emig said that by far their best reception was in germany there were a couple of towns in germany where people had no connection with any musical association and they offered to put us up the people were really amazing he credits his musical success to former mdhs music teacher doug walker he was a real inspiration for me he had a lot to do with me being where i am now he said where he is now is western university starting his fourth year in the musical performing arts program he hopes to earn-scho- iorships that will allow him to study for a masters degree overseas at the moment mr emig is working for a downtown wrecking company to earn next years tuition quite a contrast i know but it pays he said it the tour was just great he said all the countries impress ed me but i really enjoyed germany
