same thing is an a from one school equal to a b from another what is the difference in mark ing between teachers how good are our schools and how can we tell the question of standards has been raised recently ten years ago oise began us ing a study to measure public satisfaction with the school sys tem the most recent study shows the rating at 42 per cent the lowest in the 10 years since the studies began many employers parents teachers professors and even stu dents want a return to some kind of standardized exams according to a survey conducted by the toronto star from school to school and area to area theres no standard of instruction of course the schools are teaching according to ministry of education guidelines but there is room for each teacher to stress hisher own individual prefer ences evaluation is very subjec tive but do we want the teachers teaching for the test isnt individual interest and need reason to not narrowly de- i fine the curriculum as might hap- pen if we return to a type of pro vincial exam the lack of some basic math and english abilities has led some universities to develop a rating system for high schools the students marks are asses sed with previous results of stu dents from the same schools in mind in this way universities hope to select new students with the greatest chance of success this information has been made available to high school princip als for some time now and some schools have worked hard to im prove their rating with this in mind perhaps we do need to take a close look at exams in at least the two basic subjects of english and math we dont necessarily need to pattern an exam on the ones some of us were familiar with prior to the late 1960s we know how to set up exams that do not merely show how well a student can store facts but can test comprehension li teracy and ability to learn billions of dollars are being spent on education and we are obtaining results that are no bet ter than average in comparison with other industrialized nations to be competitive in the years to come we need an educational system that can give us better than just average we need a sys tem that can be measured and im proved provincewide testing in the basic areas is a step in the right direction community planning grant slated for region of york by denise mcdonald york region a commun ity planning grant of 60000 has been
