ambulance concerns intensify by denise mcdonald stouffville councillor ron robb is becoming more annoyed at his failure to persuade ministry of health officials a 24hour ambulance service is warranted here ive been pushing them for answers for over a year now but i just dont seem to be getting anywhere he said in an inter view according to councillor robb ministry officials for the pro vince have decided there will be no intown service in whitch- urchstouffville between 12 midnight and 8 am instead ambulances from markham and surrounding areas are called in to cover during that time the ambulance we have stationed in our fire hall right now is only here on a trial basis from uxbridge he explained tell me where it makes sense that a town with a population relatively smaller than our own had two ambulances before we even got one councillor robb said he has contacted both the barrie and oshawa dispatchers about the problem but has been met with nothing but stall tactics they keep giving me stories about how theyre going to try this and that pilot project and if it works in such and such a place theyll try it in stouffville he added but it just keeps going on and on to top it all off he continued our own ambulance isnt even in stouffville half the time but on standby in uxbridge markham or some ridiculous thing like that its of no value to us at all rather than the partial service now existing in town the musselmans lakearea representative would like to see ten ders come up the town can bid on for a full 24hour callback service it was supposed to be tendered in a year ago last spring he said but until that time occurs our hands are tied councillor robb claimed the callback service would operate similar to the volunteer fire department from midnight until 8 am the ambulance attendants would be equipped with beep ers be told where the call is go to the hall to pick up the ambulance and respond to the call it would still take shorter time than waiting for an ambu lance to come from markham he said it makes a heck of a lot of sense in a situation where every minute counts if we had our own service it would be so much better for the people in this town he added after all any area growing as quickly as ours surely warrants 24hour service own a masterpiece barthau jewellers istoxiic 6404646 ull serving whitchurchstouffville uxbridge area the friendly stouffville the latch- am gallery may have to close if it doesnt receive adequate public support the gallerys secretary said tuesday deen glover said in an inter view that if its financial needs arent met the stouffville facility might not be able to afford to con tinue its a possibility mrs glover explained the situation is se rious we need more support from the community the public gallery was denied 5000 in funding from the ontario arts council oac earlier this year and the art committee of the latcham gallery is lookingto the public to replace that loss weve received good funding from the town if we can just make up the oac funding from the community mrs glover said she explained shes hoping for an increase in memberships this would provide additional funding and the council oac would look favourably on that when we re quest more funds mrs glover said the financial problems are not new it really is costly to continue with this kind of thing its dis couraging to the people who are running it its constant it never seems to change though the facilty is operating as usual mrs glover said its not offering anything extra everything is really bare bones at this point theres no thing extra offered she claimed some of the things wed like to have we just cant afford wed like to hire a director but where s the money going to come from gallery officials are working to get renewed financial support from the oac for the 1988 budget but the problem is immediate according to mrs glover in a letter published on page a4 she said funds are needed now to realize the current years
