plan ning to improve your comments positive and negative will help us do this comments ranged from a caustic you are amateurs and pay too much attention to councillors squabbles to love you and cant think of a single way you could improve except by going daily response to our survey was among the highest in the metroland chain from burl ington to pickering for which we thank you it means you the reader cares jo ann stevenson canada geese are never too far from water just check out this sports editor frank king used a 300mm telephoto lens and a tripod pair photographed near atswamp pond on kennedy rd north of to make the composition canada geese normally mate for life and bloomington sideroad in whitchurchstouffville weekender are quite common in southern ontario dad a syndicated carcare columnist twenty three years ago an auto repair shop operator with a grade seven education and 10w30 motor oil in his blood convinced the old toronto telegram that they should be running a column that answered readers letters con cerning perplexing car mainte nance problems and he was just the grease monkey to do it he told them a selftaught mechanic he had made it his business to learn ev erything there was to know about the automobile and its workings the column became a huge suc cess and was soon syndicated across canada in 1971 when the tely folded the column was picked up by the toronto star where it has run for the last 16 years today ray stapley types the concluding 30 on his final column its not that theres no longer a need for such a weekly feature in this age when the automobile has from where i live become more complicated than ever its just that at the ripe young age of 74 dad no longer wants to be chained to his home office re searching the answers to his read ers numerous questions it used to come a whole lot easier back in the days when he had his own shop with the con stant exposure to all the mecha nical problems of the day keeping him current dad never let the lack of a for mal education stop him from put ting his ideas and interests in print for all to learn from through the years he wrote many feature articles for news paper and magazine alike cover ing topics such as running your own business the mystery that is static electricity and the dangers of metal fatigue his love for things mechanical went back to his early teens when his curiosity led him to strip down his motorcycle to the last bolt in an effort to discover just how the machine operated realizing he had stumbled across his area of interest he immersed himself in grease carburetors and pistons until he had mastered the trade master it he did going on to be come one of the most adept di agnosticians in the country so much so that he eventually came to offer a service to insurance companies whereby he would comb through the wreckages of serious automobile accidents in order to pinpoint the exact cause of the mishap especially where mechanical failure was involved his well documented testimony led to the dismissal of many charges of careless or dangerous driving when it turned out that the car not the driver had been at fault like a hound on the scent he could invariably find the solution to the most baffling car repair problems no guesswork like mere mortal mechanics some times resort to he would dig until he was sure he had it right so now that the column is be hind him what does dad plan to do with his time oh he just might take up golf hell be able to spend a little more time tinkering with his familys varied and assorted fleet of vehi cles and hell probably put the wrenches down long enough to en joy the company of his five kids and his grandchildren but theres another scheme on the horizon that just may keep him from mothballing the old typewriter for good ever since he returned from ac tive service in world war two he has delighted friends and family with his tales of wartime intrigue and skulduggery as seen through the eyes of the diesel engines chief on the hms puncher the air craft carrier he was assigned to for years we have encouraged him to put all of his outrageous experiences in depth impress ions and irreverent navy anec dotes into a book surely the sta tute of limitations would prevent his being courtmartialed after all this time i think hes giving it serious thought he has even dusted off his old picture of the puncher for inspiration conotnistsun the tribune weekender bruce annan publisher 9 heritage rd markham l3p1m3 2942200 4959440 6402100 6492292 published every saturday by metroland printing
