life is a study in con trast it is evident from the moment his gentle eventoned voice belies the intense furrowed brow and questioning look that at first is mistaken for aloofness the 53yearold husband of whitchurch- stouffville mayor fran sainsbury is a city boy who married a country girl a onetime hunter turned conservationist and a for mer car buff who has turned his attentions to another kind of horsepower but most of all the torontoborn grand father is a devoted family man whose own childhood provides the perfect foil for the contentment and security he now enjoys denis leads a full busy life at 6 am hes up doing chores in the barn on his 10acre farm then its off to work at cana dian tire in oshawa where he is manager of a 15bay service centre when he arrives home shortly after 6 now that ive established myself hes been building that solid base for years since the mid70s denis has been mak ing a name for himself as a top canadian breeder of appaloosa horses he has four of these western pleasure horses and shows them throughout ontario and the united states ive got a leopard one named spot who is probably the best west ern pleasure horse in ontario right now he beams but he says he may not show any horses this year its a lot of work you have to be up at 2 or 3 in the morning to bathe brush and shave them then youre on the road by 6 unguarded admiration in his younger days denis was often up before the sun he was an avid fisherman and hunter today the only shooting he does is with his camera and for six years he was a member of the south lake sim- coe conservation authority a position he had to give up when fran became a politi cian he did so without any regrets shes a very smart lady he says with unguarded admiration for his wife of near- denis sainsbury stands with his wife fran mayor of whitchurchstouffville and his prizewinning appaloosa spot the ninth line north resident is an avid horse breeder ly 29 years why would i ever want to stop her doing anything she wants not that they agree on every issue that who has won many awards for his efforts he and his wife have learned from their own pasts and created a better family life for there im getting pretty tired of working after 35 years being a service manager is a very de manding job he says retirement appeals to him on another level fran and i would have time to do some of the things weve missed in the past few years like sailing holidays and just moving around met on new years eve it is that moving around that got the sainsburys together in the first place they met at a new years eve party when she was 18 and he was 20 although she was dressed up pretty sharp he didnt ask her phone number but in the style that would later char acterize her approach to politics fran de cided what needed to be done and she did it she found out he worked at canadian tire in weston and went to several of the retail outlets before she finally found him she told me she had transmission trou ble he recalls i didnt get her a dis count it cost her 90 but once i found him smiles fran i made sure i got his phone number they were married five years later in 1958 and waited five more years before starting a family because of our upbringing we decided not to ha ve children until we could provide a home for them she says fran was raised by her mother and grandmother her father was shellshocked during the second world war and when he came home he was abusive she says he thought we were the enemy says fran my mother asked him to leave and i havent seen him to this day renovating partners the sainsburys have more in common than their childhoods we both appreci ate each others talents says denis when we bought our first house in mar- kham it was a wreck we both got in there and renovated it we love hard work and old houses laughs fran we were always sanding scraping and painting together she says theyve learned to meld our strengths and weaknesses he is quiet and im outgoing she ex plains im a talker and hes a good listen er people like him and respect his opinion because of that im better at handling stress though says fran he buries it and gets very quiet thats how you know something is bothering him trying to find out whats wrong is like trying to pull teeth from an elephant but they accept each other as they are and fran attributes their happy marriage to their vision of the future we made a commitment to each other we knew what a broken home did to us and we didnt want that to happen to our children she says its a vow they have both taken to heart togetherness with my family says de nis his clint eastwood good looks soften ing is very very important to me
