shackleton sports editor shane redshaw had to make a lot of adjustments when he left his goodwood home last fall for his first sea son of american college hock ey in michigan redshaw 20 has just re cently returned home from western michigan university wmu in kalamazoo where he completed a very success ful freshman year on and off the ice it was my first time away from home and being in the states and on my own took a few adjustments but after a while you find things arent all that different down there he said kalamazoo is only a lit tle over two hours from the border and once i got used to things i really enjoyed it i wouldnt trade the experience for anything playing as a right winger though he shoots left red shaw is on a fouryear hockey scholarship at wmu where he is studying sports medicine however the biggest change he had to deal with upon arrival at the university wasnt life in a foreign coun try but the style of hockey played by the wmu broncos they play really defen sive close checking hockey and you had to be always skat ing and staying with your man which was the opposite of the hockey id played in junior redshaw explained as a scoring leader with the junior b pickering panthers and before that the markham travelways and junior c ux- bridge bruins redshaws job had been to put the puck in the net but with the broncos he found himself on the checking line our line was always on against the other teams big line which worked out to be a good thing since we ended up getting a lot of ice time he said redshaws totals for his freshman season were 14 goals and eight assists for 22 points and he played in 38 of the broncos 43 games the year before with pick ering redshaw was the metro junior b scoring leader with some 62 goals but he realizes that us college hockey is simply not as wide open as junior and he was pleased with his first season perform ance obviously his teammates were also impressed with his play because he was voted an assistant captain on next years squad by the players b win ontario title goodwoods shane redshaw has just recently returned home from his first year of us college hockey at the university of western michigan the 20yearold right winger had a very successful fresh man season but says there are a number of differences between college and junior hockey i was kind of surprised when that happened but it was quite an honor especially since the election was by the players he said redshaw has three more seasons left with the broncos and he is predicting big things for the team in the next couple of years we had a good season last year we finished ninth in the nation and we werent even expected to finish in the top 20 he explained we had a lot of rookies on the team and this was supposed to be a building year for us with so many of their play ers coming back the broncos can do nothing but improve and redshaw said that within a couple years they could be one the top teams in the country our power play was the best in the league the bron cos compete in the central collegiate hockey associa tion ccha and we had three freshmen on it so we can only get better he added there are about 26 players in total on the squad and they are pretty well evenly split be tween canadians and amer icans redshaw said the line that redshaw play ed on featured senior pat ryan of coburg ontario and detroit native jeff green who was the leagues rookie scor ing leader most of the canadians are from ontario he said three of them from the bramalae area just west of toronto and others from st catharines and london while the major ity of american players are from the detroit area though there was one guy who grew up in new jersey head coach bill wilkinson and assistant tom newton are also canadian coach wilkinson is good hes an excellent teacher who gets his point across and the players like him redshaw said he gets a lot of respect around the league now that redshaw is back in goodwood for the summer hes biding his time between a job at betz pools in stouffvil le and playing first base on the claremontmarkham juniors fastball team ironically he played his first fastball game last wednesday night against the bosss middle of the woodbridge defence and banged it into the back of the net mo ments later eron sluga stole the ball on a tackle and added the in surance marker the panthers defence was heroic holding back an awesome offensive attack by the wood- bridge side special mention must go to the inspirational play of cap tain charlie melko goalkeeper jason gomes and defenders frank nardi joe caricari mario geraci and guy biadi stouffville was in the tourna ments toughest division pitted against squads from windsor north york and a very strong team from toronto the jets that also played in the nsl
