sdss wins spartan fitness challenge for the third year in a row stouffville distric seeondarv school sdss has won the spar tan fitness challenge the challenge is an event in which school teams represented by three male students three girls and two teachers compete in a number of fitness tests such as the mile run sit ups in a minute rope climb straddle jumps and so on obviously the team with the most points wins but there are also individual awards to the rep resentatives of each group which had the highest score sdss has been hosting the chal lenge against other york region schools for three years now and this year they had their biggest turnout and most competitive meet yet there were seven schools vying for top spot this year and the competition was fierce students t and teachers from thornhill sut ton aurora richmond hill woodbridge thornlea and sdss were running jumping climbing and putting their bodies through other assorted punishments on the gym floor last week and when the dust had finally cleared sdss once again came out on top by winning the overall team trophy also the girls team took top spot and rob mcconnell won the individual award for best male athlete linda hachey was second in the individual girls competition while teacher scott croucher was third in the battle of the head mas ters members of the sdss team were brenda and linda hachey leslie snooks rob mcconnell chris winn craig thompson and teachers scott croucher and mary frances juk stouffville slopitch off to fast start action got underway in the yorkdurham mens sloptich league against the newmarket mer chants manager carl myers is predict ing a good year and the teams ultimate goal is a shot at this years canadian junior cham pionships in british columbia with some of the pitchers weve got this season were look ing good he said pitching will be vandorfs strength this year as they have three top quality hurlcrs in stouff- villes dave chilvers mike stokes of mount albert and rich mond hills don webster for the most part last seasons pitching staff consisted entirely of dave chilvers the squad will compete in the yorksimcoe north mens fast ball league which features a large number of newmarket mens teams which should provide the juniors with some stiff com petition the pitching on some of these mens teams is very strong which will be good for our batters in the long run because it will make it that much easier for them when they face junior pitchers myers said the main focus of the juniors is to do well in tournaments and qualify for the junior provincial and national championships they will travel to ottawa in midjuly for the provincial qual- fying tournament for the national championships myers added vandorf swimmer wins gold at masters vandorps yvonne cattrall of the swim gym won two races last week at the cana dian masters national swim ming championships in eiolii- cokc in the 3539yearold categ ory cattrall collected gold medals in the 100metre breaststrokc and the 50mctre breaststrokc along with also winning a silver in the 200- metre breaststrokc cattrall did not swim a per sonal best time in cither of the events she won but the fact shes four months pregnant may have slowed her down a bit last weekend cattrall was in san francisco california competing in the us masters championships at stanford university yvonnk cattrall
