clubs production of miami ice on the weekend dopey was played by 11yearold sandy graham alan shackleton by alan shackleton miami ice the uxbridge skat ing clubs yearend carnival ice show was an impressive and en tertaining production that high lighted the clubs many talented skaters the show was a takeoff on the popular television series miami vice and had two flashy detec tives chasing bank robbers the ice pic gang across the state of florida along the way spectators were taken on a trip through the state with stops made at a number of popular attractions including dis ney world cape canaveral and the everglades each stop featured solos and choreographed sequences with lots of skaters on the ice the show opened and closed with solos by jennifer cook the clubs canada winter games gold medal winner as always her skating was a thing of beauty to watch the first scene of the show was a slide presentation of the bank robbery which initiates the action to follow this was an interesting concept with the slides showing the bank sterling trust in ux bridge being robbed and the cops chasing the robbers into the arena where they jump through the screen and onto the ice the members of the ice pic gang were luke austin timothy bunker and troy mccully while the lawmen were played by jason mccully and chuck reaman there were a lot of demands made on these skaters throughout the show including solos and some action filled dance and fight scenes and they played their roles superbly basically the show was a series of production numbers each set to the theme of the particular loca tion in which it was supposed to take place a stop at a latin nightclub fea tured an entertaining chorus of girl bellhops calypso dancers and a great solo by samantha creet as a showgirl as in years past it was the younger skaters who captured the crowds hearts they were charming as dolphins bears alli gators fish and the 101 dalma- tions the dalmations there were only 24 were played by the youngest members of the club and they were especially cute as they skated out with their two fire hyd rants during the disney world scene the stop at disney world was the finale of the first half and it was excellent the parade led by mickey mouse was a favorite with the kids and the country bears jamboree with a solo by alicia willis and its a small world numbers made it seem just like a visit to the amusement park the second half opened with the dance pairs of shannon ainger and chuck reaman jill cassie and troy mccully and luke au stin and sandra cassie their powerful and flawless skating set the tone for the rest of the show as the tempo increased and the good guys got closer to the bad guys the scene in the everglades swamp was hilarious as a bunch of drunken moonshiners took on the law in a freeforall that had buckets of water popcorn and cream pies flying across the ice the set for this scene was espe cially believable with cyprus trees and fog giving the swamp an eerie look the music for this number featured some good old hillbilly rock and roll including the georgia satellites and you cant go far wrong with that in the final number the detec tives put the cuffs on the ice pic gang in a sleazy south florida bar featured in this number were great solos by tracy taylor jennifer cook and luke austin there was also some amazing precision skating by the senior girls including high speed figure eights and a huge line whipping round the ice in a circle those numbers were of the quality you would see by a chorus line in a professional ice show in fact almost everything to do with miami ice had a professional look to it the costumes were daz zling and everyone who worked on them deserves a pat on the back the lighting was also first- rate and it included strobe lights and colored spots which really added to the show everyone involved with the pro duction of miami ice is to be con gratulated for putting on such an entertaining eightball time for the stouffville edwardsmurphy bantam clip pers as they dropped the first two games in their best of five cham pionship series to a tough belle river squad the clippers are battling belle river for the ontario minor hock- ey association omha bb crown and if they lose one more game their defence of the title which they won last year will have been shortlived heading into the series opening games last weekend in belle riv er the clippers were quite confi dent theyd just defeated mid land in a emotional series that went the full five games and while they didnt expect belle river to be pushovers they be lieved they were going to win that didnt happen they were bombed 83 in the first game saturday but regained some of their poise for sundays match which was much closer even though they still lost 42 we were too cocky in that first game bantam coach kerry kel ler said however he doesnt want to waste a lot of time making ex cuses about what happened last weekend the bantams are con centrating on winning games three and fourthis weekend at the recreation centre still the long sixhour drive obviously had an effect on the clippers as did belle rivers hardhitting grinder brand of hockey its hard to explain the way belle river plays keller said its a completely different style of hockey from midland theyre a much more physical team and theres not a lot of pretty passing they force you into mistakes and then they capitalize on them in the first game the clippers got rattled and stopped playing the disciplined hockey that has got them this far keller said the clippers opened the scoring in game one when scott mckinley hit the mark on a set up from cap- tain dan larmer and aaron mcwilliams it was all down hill from there though as belle river scored seven straight goals three of them were on power plays one was short handed and three were scored within a minute of each other late in the second period and early in the third darren baston from larmer and craig stronach and darryl ham assisted by jason under wood scored the other clipper goals in game two sunday the ban tams played much better and fought back from a 30 defecitto nearly tie it kevin francis scored on a set up from darren baston and sven hennze made it 32 with only nine seconds remaining in the second period assists on the goal went to baston and mckinley despite dominating the third period they couldnt get the equalizer and belle river in creased their lead by two when they took advantage of one of the clippers few mistakes in the period though the situation may appear bleak on the surface the bantams were in a similar posi tion against midland down 21 in the series they took the last two matches convincingly including the deciding game on the road were not dead keller said youll see a great comeback weve been in this position before and we know what we have to do and weve got the talent to do it there werent a lot of specta tors at the belle river arena and keller believes a big crowd for the games this weekend will work to the clippers advantage a big crowd will really help us he said the fans can make a difference for us the guys get pumped up for it and if we jam the arena belle river will be in game three goes saturday night at 7 pm at the recreation centre and game four is at 1 pm sunday game five is scheduled for the following sunday also in stouff ville
