town public library program allowed moms a march break dozens of stay athome children enjoy variety of entertainment tribune march 25 1987 a5 enough to flash a pretty smile at the camera denise mcdonald it was march break week at the whitchurch- stouffville library and once again the staff prepared an exciting program for outofschool children here sixyearold mark mccurdy of cherry street kr 3 stouffville plugs his cars as scott irvine of the toronto symphony blows out some deep notes on his tuba jim thomas fouryearold helen mann of cherry street rh 3 stouffville tries her hand at beating out a tunc on the drums accompanied by beverley toronto symphony johnstone of the jim thomas fouryearold susan hendren of blake street stouffville reads to her dollie cricket during a break in activities jim thomas the librarys automatic bubbleblower attracted much attention no one except the staff was quite able to figure out how it worked denise mcdonald spring fashion show stouffville park view village will host stouff- villes first fashion show of the spring season the colorful promenade to include 17 children will be held thursday march 26 at 8 pm the sponsoring organiza tion is the eta lambda chap ter of beta sigma phi a limited number of tickets will be available at the door adult models are linda baxter debbie macdonald susan shcrban penny frederick brenda crowder joan middleton and gail har rison the commentator is sharon sugden apparel for the evening will be provided by kids port the wedding room the clothes horse and anchcrils fine shoes the models hair styles will be prepared by headlines with aesthetics by the pine door spotlight on education set fitness example by lynda williams education columnist the back to the basics movement to compulsory school credits brought with it the idea that students today are not physi cally fit at least one credit at the secondary level must by physical education the ontario medical association is wor ried that schools have failed to recognize the importance of phys ed students it seems are spending too much time in front of televisions and computers theyre also eating too much junk food ideally a program of daily physical education at the elementary level and more than one year of compulsory classes at the secondary level would be preferred one of the problems is that the fitness level is har der to sec and measure in terms of value to future job prospects since the push is on to upgrade what peo ple perceive as the inadequacies of the school system mathematics sciences and english arc considered topranking sub jects let us consider the advantages of a daily fitness break at the elementary level would students be able to sit still longer through out the rest of the day if they had such a break could they concentrate better on the socalled academic subjects do they really need a scheduled class or is that the purpose of recess many senior elementary students arc on the rotary system for classes and do not have a recess a fitness break would prob ably be a definite asset on a daily basis but where would the time come from there is barely enough time in the day as it is to cover all aspects of the curriculum at the secondary level the possibility of completing school in four years instead of five makes the thought of taking physical education for more than the compulsory one credit mostly for those students who may seek a career in the field many other stu dents wish to get on with other credits for their diplomas hopeful of a fouryear high school career regardless of the fact most educators are saying not to rush through in four years how can we encourage fitness for starters we should not leave it up to the schools the best way is to set a good example parents must take the responsi bility for the habits of their children the schools are to complement the teaching the parents begin somewhere along the line it seems to have been misconstrued and the schools arc expected to do all the teaching you dont have to belong to a sports club or purchase expensive equipment to be reasonably fit walking is cheap exercise the schools contribute to the habits your children adopt but parents and friends arc the most influential if you want your children to be fit dont wait for the school to do something about it teach good eating habits and set a good example after all isnt that what parenting is all about
