4 weekender febryary7 1987 weekender troubling questions remain one cannot help but have mixed feelings over the sentencing of tyron kerrutt he was convicted on a number of drinking and driv ing charges and sentenceeho 4v4 years in jail for causing the death of a sixyearold neale hagan the whole situation is tragic the needless death of a little boy a man with an obvious drinking problem and a seeming disre gard for his own safety and the safety of others we cant fault judge hugh zim- mermann on his sentencing it is long enough to provide a deter rent yet not too long to complete ly ruin mr kerrutts life in fact we applaud the judge for his wis dom in handing down the sent ence yet there is a nagging feeling that somehow this is not enough that something else needs to be done to deal with drinking and driving especially for repeat offenders such as mr kerrutt some kind of treatment is needed to help him come to grips with his problem the senseless death of a little boy is too high a price to pay for educating such people don bernard a a ground hos day february 2 uekote rock star ordered a rolltop desk how do you like us so far my somewhat embarassed sister cal led out to no one in particular from the hotel balcony it seems that bruce had found his holiday groove after our first day in the blazing hot venezuela sun and the old tape deck was cranked up to the point where it was leaking oil the sun seems to affect my hearing i guess but hey early beatles stuff has to be played loud to be appreciated we suddenly became aware of the presence of a middle aged woman two balconies above us pat appologized for her brothers decibel excesses and offered to reduce the volume to a more con siderate level dont bother she replied casually ive been listening to that at home for years i kind of like it pats face mirrored her puzzle ment run that one by me again she offered incredu lously my son plays mean guitar for the rock group rush have you heard of them his name is alex lifeson have i heard of him it was back in 1979 the door to our stouffville pine furniture shop which doubled as our house swung open and in walked a long haired individual wearing a great coat and a rather impressive pair of leather boots he walked up to my roll top desk the cadillac of my line and looked it over how long will it take to have one built he in quired two months i informed him heck it used to take me that long just to psyche myself up to build one of those monsters ill take one the stranger declared he hadnt even asked the price now i figured that this guy had to be either a drug dealer or a rock musician i quickly ruled out the former he wasnt at all seedy i engaged him in conversation finding him to be a most amiable and obliging individual i finally popped the burning question what do you do for a living im a musician in a rock group he offered bingo i thought congratulat ing myself on my intuitivcness his name was alex lifeson- and the group he played for was none other than rush lived just out side of stouffville with his wife and family a true gentleman yes i responded to the lady in the upper balcony i certainly have heard of your son it would appear that alex life- son hadnt forgotton how his dad a miner from yugoslavia lent so much support during the groups formative years for it was alex who had put his mother millie and father ned on that balcony in venezuela two weeks at the macuto sheraton is a very gener ous christmas present our invitation for millie and ned to join us for a cold beverage turned into dinner at the melia caribe next door and a delightful evening of conversation ned told us of how he had gone into the plumbing business after coming to canada and how alex and the boys would empty his van of plumbing supplies on weekends so that they could load their music equipment in and chug off to hamilton or where ever to do a gig- endless hours of practice and enormous dedication eventually paid off for these talented profes sionals they must constantly en dure the grind of touring while expending the same high energy level concert after concert total exhaustion overtakes them after each performance yet they always find time after each show to answer the questions of eager press types determined to extract all the details needed for that indepth article millie and ned have come to see rock music as the art form that it truely is sure it may not be ev erybodys cup of tea but coming to understand their sons music has added enjoyment to their lives and widened their horizons meeting these two vibrant peo ple was one of the highlights of an unforgettable trip to a terrific sun spot and when it was all over i was left shaking my head in disbe lief when i considered the odds of going to venezuela and en countering the parents of the only rock star that i ever built a rolltop desk for it truely is a small world after all conomis t sun the tribune weekender bruce annan publisher 9
