came to fsstpnffville from scarborough in 1983 where she set up faith farms on highway 48 with her daughters heather 14 and heidi 13 a beautiful and talented rid er margaret claims she was sever much of a competitor and has only been in a few shows i could never go in there just to defeat someone ifignui to be for my own enjoy- ment its the classical art of rid ing that interests me and the harmony that develops be- tween a horse and rider as you hsach that goal she says however when i do show its- as an instructor so they can evaluate the work ive dneaidlmdohg with these children faith farms in stouffville rides horse gardian- na the unique riding school takes a christian approach to the rela tionship between horse and rider denise mcdonald although im helping these children improve and perfect their riding im also teaching then har mony idvisr friendship hess according to margaret each of her students has had apersonalstruggle with their horses but through her guidance and their love it has given them the faith not to quit and to trust in god the horse is born in a wild independent selfserving state but unless they learn to rely on someoneelseito help them cbpelviththeir fears theyjbecome violent she says z according to margaret her students horses are im mediately taught they must learn to trust and obey they have to learn there is someone here bigger than they she says the horse must learn to be humble he then understands there is someone greater than he where he once may have had fears he alone couldnt cope with he now has a greater source outside himself in whom to place his trust although margaret says the horses come to rely on their- owners in times of fear she also teaches her students they in turn must rely on god i want these children to put their trust in god so when they are afraid they too have some one where they can turn bravery is not the absence of fear but the willingness to go forward in spite of it she according to margaret the children are taught to make their horses stand still in the barn aisle even while un attended and to give kisses she claims this teaches the horse that the one who makes the rules also loves him the horses first real les son is to learn respect for au thority and responsibility and the same applies to these chil- dren she says they are not going to be obeyed unless they too are obedient they must be themselves what they want their horses to be if they are argumentative with their pa rents they should expect their horses to be the same way with them if they dont take things for granted and take in all the problems difficulties and sor rows it makes all the riches so muchmore meaningful although margaret does not have the facilities to take on any new students she has ex- pressed a willingness to go out to other barns and teach j3dss uxbridge in tiger tourney the sixth annual uxbridge junior tiger basketball tourna ment opens on saturday with a game between local teams monday night mak ing a beautiful endtoend rush for a goal in the second period thefirstgameofthisserieswas played on saturday in lindsay the clippers started this game slowly perhaps feeling the affects of some coaching changes made necessary by the omhas indefinite suspension of coach glen whitebread and some re cent exhibition game losses however stouffville got back on track in the second to make a mistake sounds terrifying yet it is exactly what a figure skater does every time he or she performs over the last week ive had a crash course in the basics of figure skating and boy have i learned some things i still may not know the difference between a tripleaxle and a squeaky axle but i do know that figure skating is a very demanding sport that requires an incredible amount of courage on the part of both the athletes and their parents while at the uxbridge invitational on the weekend i had an inside look at just how tough this sport can be some 450 competitors from all across ontario ranging in age from six years and up took part in a number of different categories during the three day event the invitational now in its eighth year is a prestigious competition and the pressure on the kids must have been great however they handled every possible setback from bonejarring falls to broken skate laces in the middle of a routine to their music suddenly stopping with dignity and courage it takes real character to get up from a fall in the first minute of a routine knowing that your chance of winning has disappcrcd and con tinue to skate your best even though your knee is bruised and through it all youre supposed to smile and look poised thats rough even the meanest football player is allowed to show pain and disappointment sidelines by alan shackleton sports editor hard as it may be on the skaters i think it must be even tougher on their parents who have to sit in the stands and watch unable to control what happens on the ice one figure skating father i talked to described it as a special kind of agony i can understand that i was getting anxious watching complete strangers skating hoping they wouldnt make any mistakes it must be murder on the parents still as far as i could tell the invitational went off without a tear or a nervous breakdown a lot of the credit for that has to go to the uxbridge skating club who did a tremendous job organizing the event keeping track of 450 skaters over three days takes a lot of work making each one of them feel special takes even more but that was the mood of the invitational i thought the medal and trophy presentations were especially well done after this weekend i think i am on the way to becoming a figure skating fan there is one thing that does bother me a bit about the sport however and that is the music i must have heard the theme from beverly hills cop about 200 times in the last few days and now i cant get it out of my head and its driving mc crazy shack tracks you arc entering another dimension if some of you were feeling a little confused last week thinking perhaps that youd missed a day somewhere in particular a wednesday the wednesday on which the sdss spartans played father bcrsanni you can now rest easy youre okay thats when the game was played it was your intrepid agent me who was in the twilight zone for some very strange reason i reported that the game was played on thursday in last weeks paper look theres a signpost up ahead maybe all the snow ive been shovelling has made me bitter it certainly hurt my back but where the heck has everybody gone all my friends enemies and people i barely know arc going to cuba is this some kind of communist plot im suspicious
