is seven dol lars per person spotlight on education after grade 13 by lynda williams january is decision time for grade 13 students university community college or the work force which will it be many grade 13 graduates may say this is it ive had enough school some may not know what they want to do even if they wish to continue there are many reasons to encourage students with adequate grades to apply to university first people with higher levels of education on an aver age earn higher incomes over the course of a lifetime second its an enriching experience the more you know the more choices are available third as society and ideas become more complex better educated people have the potential benefit of being more in demand for jobs many parents have a problem persuading their sons and daughters that the benefits outweigh the struggle for places and the thought of three to four more years in school the lure of making money now seems too good to resist but attending university is not like high school there is a much wider variety of subjects from which to choose counsellors admissions officers and a career centre can be much more helpful than merely reading the universi ty calendar i some universities students publish a report that ranks professors providing new students information on teachers who are good because they teach and inspire the first year of university is usually five credits not the seven or eight taken yearly in high school this provides students an opportunity to spend more time on each subject 1 university classes typically meet three times per week this requires more selfdiscipline but provides flexibility university isnt for everyone community colleges offer a wide range of opportunities their catalogues counsellors and career centres can help you make a decision if you feel university is not for you entering the work force directly from high school is sometimes the only practical and rewarding choice at the time many people have done extremely well by this route but more and more employers today are looking for further education to fill those positions where advancement is offered going directly into the work force has also helped those who need a year or two to decide what direction they finally want to take some return to school and some remain in the work force v whatever your choice the race is on o university spaces have cutoff marks community col leges are bursting at the seams jobs are available its a difficult decision for some young adults to make open house family friends and relatives are invited to an open house sunday jan 18 at the mt zion community centre in honor of mrs alma jones on the occasion of her 80th birthday the hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm newcomers club the whitchurchstouffville
