p28 weekender november 15 1986 weekender rens why is the poppy important to me lisa is athlete of the at first i thought the poppy was just for decoration later i realized that we wouldnt be here if it werent for the people who fought for us and our coun try some people might ask questions like whats the meaning of wearing a poppy or how was the poppy chosen there are very good answers people wear poppies to honor and worship the ones who died the men and women who sacrificed their lives for us the poppy was chosen be cause it was the flower found to be growing around flanders field and other battlefields this flower was worn by veterans and families of the sol diers who died over the years things changed now the pop- month why i remember 3 student lisa ann jones is v grade 3 student lisa ann jones is claremonts up and coming cross country running star the eight- yearold dynamo was named her schools athleteofthemonth af ter she won a bronze medal at the recent canadian crosscountry finals helping her team to a first place finish lisa anne also placed second at the provincials and was runnerup at an earlier area meet held at dagmarski re sort our war dead i should always try to remem ber the brave men or soldiers who risked their lives so we could survive in a better world today they left their families wives children and jobs to give us a free country they werent jvinluaajn maastrvzjrt c jkocaq ekjqovxv jljoiul jycrusxij jaoofv xtxjouirnclj ylwirrcx5t oxc jbojnaq taylor s trying to be heroes they were just doing what they felt was right these men were battling to bring peace love free reli gion and free rights to our coun try so we could live and they won the battle for us as i sit here in my desk i can say to myself they were heroes for they saved our coun try from destroying itself i know im still young and will possibly never find out how brave and strong they really were to leave their families and fight for the new generation a peaceful generation which most did not see on each remembrance day as i wear my poppy and bow my head i will try to remember how they fought for us nancy adams grade 8 wear a poppy remembrance day is about the people who died in the war for us they made our country free we wear poppies on remembr ance day to show we are proud of what they did for us on remembrance day we pray for the people who died in the war cheryl norton grade 2 pies are sent to schools and towns but there were not enough real poppies to go around in the united states the artificial poppy was introduced this poppy sold extremely well and made money for medicines and educational activities the money was also used for the abandoned and the unfortunate ones who lost their families in the war so if you think you have it hard just think of all the chil dren who lost all of their loved ones in the war buy a poppy and think of all the courageous people who fought for us sonia cece grade 8 claremont public school the scarecrow one morning i heard a strange noise out in the cornfield it sound ed like someone crying so i got up and went outside into the corn field then i saw a scarecrow crying i went up to him and said what is the matter i have no friends to play with the scarecrow answered mmm ithought i wonder if i could help out but first i have to think so i thought and thought then i said ive got an idea so i got some food and put it in a bowl and tied it to his hands some crows came down and the scarecrow asked the crows to play with him and they did christine williams grade 3 snowing popcorn i awoke in the morning and realized it had snowed popcorn in the night oh no it was all over the lawn was covered in popcorn then it rained butter and when that was over it rained salt i had to cut the lawn for my allowance to pay my mom back for the new truck she bought me so the only thing to do was to eat my way through i called all my friends and asked if they wanted to eat my lawn they said sure when they came we got to work we ate and ate and ate finally we got through i cut the lawn and paid my mom back aaron kobold grade 3 poster power grade 8 students dave lehman left and will chadwick will represent claremont public school in the poster section of an annual remembr ance day contest sponsored by the royal canadian legion sonia cece and nancy adams penned the north pickering schools literary con test submissions both of which arc featured on this page the weeken wishes to thank dick mary cohen of markham hwy 7 mccowan rd for their support of the childrens page since september 7th 1985 youve been a big part of the success of our newspaper thank you
