sounds at the cotton club on hwy 48 south of 14th avenue wellington tonight david bacha formerly of bob seger and the blithe spirit a spirited performance by mlt by gekarda smithhill1er many famous theatres are thought to have resident ghosts and markham theatre is no ex ception as a matter of fact re cently that stage has seen two blithe spirits entertaining theatre goers the cause of these ecto- plasmic materializations was markham little theatres pro duction of noel cowards blithe spirit directed by lillian sievanen and produced by bill monahan this production was a success the directing performers cos tumes and the set were all ex tremely professional the play set in the early forties takes place in the beautiful draw ing room of the condomines house in england a writer charles condomine performed by steve turl wants to experi ence a seance in order to better recreate such an atmosphere in a mystery he is writing thus he and his second wife ruth anne robinson invite to dinner an eccentric medium named madame arcati bunty webb a seance is conducted with other sceptical guests pre sent eric newton and iris san derson the others remain unbelievers even after the comical mystical experience except for charles k charles has a dilemma not only can he hear elvira his first dead wife played by michele browne but he and only he can see her later ruth begins to believe in elvira when the mischievious spirit makes things travel through the air closes doors and finally smashes a vase into the fireplace ruth becomes more and more upset as her astral bigamist of a husband pays too much attention to his former spouse madame arcati is called in to exorcise the apparation but much to the condomines consternation this cannot be done since the con trol is not cooperating and the effervescent medium does not know who this human control is in the meantime elvira is up to dangerous tricks for she wants to have charles dead with her however her plan backfires and it is ruth who is killed after many hilarious attempts to send the ghosts back madame arcati finally discovers that edith the maid dana clarefield is the con trol now charles can be rid of his two bickering supernatural wives anne robinson gave a superb performance as ruth we watch as she deals with what she be lieves is a hallucinating drunken husband she delights the audi ence with her reactions to her hus- bands comments which are directed at elvira but which ruth thinks are hurled at her when she finally realized there is an elvira her attempts to com municate with the invisible spirit are highly amusing for she is al ways directing her comments to the wrong area ms robinson was extremely convincing as the distraught ruth condomine steve turl was the picture of a stuffy upper middle class en glish writer he gives a realistic portrayal of a man at wits end michele browne gave her char acter elvira a definite earthy sensual and yet ethereal quality which gave the audience a true sense of elvira personality newcomer dana clarefield as edith the maid caused many chuckles as she made it obvious with her clutsy clumsy stomping about that she was very young and had much to learn about being an efficient maid the real star of the show was madame arcati played by the ex uberant bunty webb from the moment she determinedly strides onto the stage we get a feeling for the eccentric medium her overly dramatic way of speaking mov ing and even smelling are perfect characteristics to convey the mediums zest for life v silver bullet band will be play ing at 930 pm there is
