cullen country barns by don bernard weekender editor cullen country barns foray into the world of evening dinner theatre is certainly a gamble for the barnlike shopping complex at kennedy rd and steeles ave the mall has a small theatre which has been providing light- hearted daytime entertainment since it opened three years ago last week the theatre opened on thursday friday and satur day evenings for the more soph isticated demands of the evening theatre crowd the dinner theatre features a roast beef buffet followed by the play mcgillicuddy s lost weekend alas the food was ex cellent but the play was more suited to afternoon fare central character in the thinly plotted comedy is zeke mcgilli cuddy played by steve baker the police chief and lone police man in hamhocks ontario after two years without a holiday he has decided to get away for the weekend inevitably events overtake tste fltia cafe patio were pleased to announce our fall winter hours starting september 18 closed before he can head north for his fishing trip an unsolved kid napping a gang of children on the loose and an altercation at a local strip club make for a hectic weekend steve baker is a convincing police chief he plays his part with energy and enthusiasm even if some of the humor is a lit tle overplayed his timing is good when it comes to punchlines for the oneliners in the play and hes convincing in the plays few se rious moments his main foes are local teacher and town councillor sally hemple paula devitt a selfrighteous but attractive widow who is cru sading to clean up all the immoral goingson in hamhocks and har riet montgomery mary knickle wife of a prominent industrialist who insists her rebellious teenage son is really a fine boy a love interest for the chief is cindy lou quagmire carolyn tweedle an aggressive widow neighbor of zekes all play their parts with energy and enthu siasm mayor lumpy played by larry jannison rounds out the cast hes the archetypal smalltown politi cian trying to please everyone and most concerned about keep ing taxes down hence the one- man police force although the play was enjoy able the lack of plot and charac terization made some of the humor tired and predictable cer tainly zeke comes across as a real flesh and blood character as does his girl friend cindy lou however councillor hemple remains a shrill unlikable woman to the end as does harriet montgomery and the mayor is rather a caricature of a politician rather than a real person still the play is fun and it com bined with a superb meal made for an enjoyable evening written by keith roulston the play has been previously per formed at the blyth summer fes tival theatre in blyth ontario the direction by marni walsh- spanton was swift and sure although characterization seemed to be sacrificed to the slapstick humor at times cost for the dinner and play is 22 dinner is at 6 pm and the show is at 8 pm thursday to saturday the current play is
