p4 weekender march 22 1986 weekender comment spring a joyous season although spring hasnt yet sprung there is an expectancy in the air that the great thaw is just around the corner a local woman called the weekender this week and told about seeing the first robin of the season and everywhere we look there are spring fashion shows a sure sign that really warm weather is a matter of a few short weeks away and thats a relief after the bleak ness of winter spring is a welcome time of year for several reasons there is a feeling of renewal after the harshness of winter a relief that canada isnt just the great white north its also warm summer days swimming boating and a leisurely day at the beach for the joggers golfers and baseball enthusiasts spring means getting outdoors again and vigorously pursuing a favorite activity and the warm weather is the delight of gardeners cleaning up the yard and fertiliz ing the lawn as a prelude to the lush greenery that comes later in the season the joys of spring have inspired poets and athletes alike were en couraged that a new cycle begins again and that winter is not eter nal after all weekender mailbag ood joucfi unionville precision scaling ams at iie canadians in vancouver marcr 23 2930 1936 f raging creek has them cut off dear sir a potential major natural disas ter has begun to occur in the com munity of unionville a previously unnoticed creek swelled by spring floods to a depth of seveal inches and a width of more than a yard at spots has threatened to cut the residents of the manhattan development from the balance of unionville the residents of this commun ity are alarmed about the im plications this trickle may have for our future we suspect that it will increase as time goes on with no sense of panic regard ing the problem trustees of the york region board of education this week voted unanimously to exclude the manhattan develop ment from the balance of the un ionville community with a new boundary it is well known that mccowan rd is the eastern boundary of un ionville when it came to estab lishing a boundary between mar- kham and unionville for board of education purposes they chose to ignore this boundary but sought one further west initially determined to be the kennedy road bypass it has now been firmly entrenched in this previously unnoticed creek residents assume the meaning is ominous the board of educa tion is working on a contingency plan which will allow manhattan students to be evacuated daily to mdhs this must be because it is anti cipated that in future as the creek increases in size and intensity that it will not be possible to get school buses across the chasm with the foresight one expects from this group the post office hs already come to the same conclu sion although the street addres ses are clearly unionville no one may receive mail addressed to them in unionville it is either returned to sender or readdressed to markham the post office knows that things are going to get worse and there is no need for postal employees to risk life and limb crossing the swelling tide when service can be easily provided by manhattan residents driving to markham and lining up to retrieve their mangled mail no one can predict where this ditch is going to extend nor how fast it will grow as it renders our unionville community assunder will it as is now the case only erode properties and neighbor hoods on its eastern bank or will it eventually create such acrevasse that residents on both sides will be falling into it will it eventually reach the proportions of the grand canyon enveloping the whole of unionville the solution is obvious while the voracious beast is still a new born it must be destroyed before it can destroy our community the ditch must be filled in eli minating all the present and anti cipated problems manhattan de velopment must remain an in separable part of unionville com munity concerned citizens of manhat tan of bridle trail and of the ba lance of unionville will be arranging for emergency work crews to meet behind the manhat tan homes sales office complete with all necessary supplies and equipment to fill the creek on saturday march 22 at 11 am it is believed that almost 10 heaping shovels of fill will be re quired if we act together and if we act now this pending natural disaster will be averted brian clements
