aurora julie is considered one of the top basketball playersin her school and all of york region she also enjoys volleyball badmin ton and downhill skiing she was president of the girls athletic asso ciation in 198485 and plays the clarinet in the school band following graduation julie plans to go on to university either queens mcmas- ter waterloo or simon fraser jim thomas high news student talent lakes by chris garbutt sdss correspondent move over music mania here comes variety show 1986 yes its the entertainment event of the year the best show in town it has everything- music to dancing to hilarious comedy under the watchful eyes of tasneem doctor susan murphy janice peterson and david price the months of preparation have come down to this one week helping the student directors are staff advisors mrs stamatiou mr rehill and mr hodgson everything is in readiness for opening night tomorrow props are finished skits have been polished and dances have been com pletely worked out vthe mcs for the show are derek stem and jane white they will be guiding the audience through a great variety hence the name of talentfilled acts ras9bhi v the dances are entertaining and diverse they range from the roaring twenties classic called the charleston choreographed by kathy goldman and charmaine lintner to an ultramodern piece entitled axel f led by janice peterson new attitude isthe third of the dances it is choreographed by jill keith another features selections from the wizard of oz there is also a solo performance by heather martin called i can do that and jill keith and leslie stronach perform a duo act in into the groove 7vv one of the most difficult challenges is singing solo not only does it require a grest deal of talent it also takes a lot of courage there are two solos in this years shbwlyin eyes an old eagles composi tion performed by claudette trcmblay and the rose sung by jennifer kueneman there is even an unexpected performance by graydon card that must be seen to be believed other musical entertainment will be offered by the sdss stage band a group called details at 11 00 and the choir there will also be a group playing during intermission there are a large number of skits this year and once again a wide variety is offered buckwheat rogers in space is as funny as the name is intriguing it stars sheldon rennicks jason stronach simon gallop sarah winger neil jones marc meyer and steve frdhske ernie and bert is not a sesame street sketch but a very interestingdialogue between ben wallis and tylcrtownend simon gallop provides a monologue with a few brief interjections from guycowan in zeke and earl those are just three of the 10 skits included in variety show 86 without doubt this this could be the most funfilled evening since variety show 85 try and make room for it on your schedule it opens feb 27 tomorrow night and extends through march 1 showtime is 8 pm each evening tickets are 4 adults 250 senior citizens and students and 150 for children by jim thomas whitchurch many ingre dients go into the making of an outstanding basketball player skill is one perhaps no 1 height helps too putting the two together adds up to eighteenyearold julie gol dring one of the finest female basketball players at gw wil liams secondary school and perhaps all of york region shes our girl next door julie resides on a lovely ten- acre property north of the van dorf road between concessions 6 and 7 she has two brothers paul 21 attending lakehead universi ty thunder bay and mark 15 also a student at williams the family moved from scarborough to whitchurchstouffville ten years ago although basketball is julies favorite sport she excels in other areas too including volleyball badminton and downhill skiing she was president of the girls athletic association in 198485 and received the kiwanis club academicathletic award at commencement exercises last fall basketball has become a year- round activity for julie she plays in two other leagues during the offseason and attends a basket ball camp at parry sound every summer stouffvilles camille ruther ford also a top basketball star is a close friend despite the fact they play on opposing teams although best known for her prowess in sports julies in terests extend far beyond the high school gym she scored an 84 per cent average in her first grade 13 semester at wss plays the clarinet in the high school band works on alternate weekends with the association for the mentally and physically handicapped and is employed on alternate weekends at shoppers drug mart aurora she plans to attend university in september shes made applica tion at memaster hamilton queens kingston waterloo and simon fraser in british col umbia julies loud in her praise of the staff and the curriculum at wil liams she describes the teachers as fantastic its a great school she says julies enjoyed ski trips to ver- j mont and new hampshire shes looking forward to a holiday in quebec during the march break and a band trip to boston in may although julie will miss her close association with both home and school shes looking forward to graduation after five years im ready to move on she says a course in kinetheology science of motion is a first choice while definite concerning her future julie will not soon forget her past particularly those teachers who have gone that ex tra mile helping chart her career theyve been a tremendous help she says persistence finds pet claremont when sadie a pet oneyearold rottweillerdog strayed from the home of bill and helen read rr 2 claremont the family feared they might nev er see her again but they didnt give up hope mr read had flyers printed con taining a description and photo of their pet they were deposited in mailboxes over a wide area they also offered a reward for her safe return on saturday night they re ceived a call sadie had been spot ted near the 4th cone of ux- bridge mr read went immediately to the home but no luck the dog was nowhere to be seen on sunday the same party cal led again sadie had returned it was quite a reunion mrs read told the tribune the peo ple refused the reward she said
