tribune february 19 1986 a19 nearly two hundred entries ballantrae students show science skills by erkki pohjolainen ballantrae nearly two- thirds of the students at ballan trae public school entered this years science fair with about 200 projects in competition the task of judging must have been ex tremely difficult the projects were marked wednesday afternoon on three levels primary junior and in termediate and in three general categories life science applied sthence and engineering and aitth and physical science jn the junior division of the life sciences competiton megan mor- rjsoh 11 came first with her ex periments on hydroponics grow ing plants without soil in an in terview at the school megan told the tribune she started oh the project about a month ago her display included 32 sam ples of seedlings grown in various environments and each had a graph to illustrate its daily prog ress she included 10 graphs to de monstrate the benefits of planting seeds in formica chips with abun dant water rather than soil her display was neatly orga nized with the plants mounted on two wooden racks the compari sons and illustrations were fas tened to two large boards stand ing behind the experiments ex planations about the experiment and comments on the plants daily progress were written into a 48- page report jl worked about halfanhour every day just on doing the observations megan said megan has heard comments that hydroponics does not work too well but she said mom asked me to start some already in mar ch so we can transplant them outside in the spring her mother thinks it works andrea wilson finished sec- cond behind megan in the junior division with a project on taste followed by edith coates for her work on roots in the primary level rebecca morrison won with her investiga tion of the five senses tami senour came second with a pro ject on backyard bugs third- went to the team of jennifer mcleod and lawnie wallace for their work on sea shells liane beam came first in the intermediate level with a project on food rob graham and mike moran were awarded second for their team effort on plants shane orourke took third with a look at the cardiovascular system in the applied science and en gineering class first in the prim ary division went to derek de- ttner for his research on wind mills david butcher came second with an investigation of the kaleidoscope followed by jenny carpenter and a project on popcorn david coleby and matthew robinson combined their focus on lasers to win in the junior divi sion sherri gray with a look at papermaking came second fol lowed by monika paquin and tra cy bell teaming up to do a project on braces a study of bridges by johnathan cowley was the win ner in the intermediate competi tion fred christensens work on thermal windows came second melody brabants project on pap er shane ulbps solar colector in vestigation and sean tomlins windpower research finished in a threeway tie for third daniel gerrond and paul hrynewych re ceived honorable mention for their project on pollution as did doug henderson for his work on solar energy in the math and physical scien ce division of the competition adam senour won in the primary level with his detailed look at tor nados sara cliff came second with a project on magnets fol lowed by jeremy wise and his work with magnets debbie sansom won in the junior division with her research into astronomy lisa dulude came second with her work enti tled chemistry disappearing chemicals chris bellerby and megan butcher took third with their investigation of chlorine bleach corina wilson took first in the intermediate level with her pro ject on fire followed by cathy sansom and a look at the weath er heather banks and sarah clark did research to learn how water changes the earths sur face and tied for third with kevin dancy and his investigation of air pressure honorable mentions went to kelly sheridan with a look at light and paul winger for his project on solids
