school mdhs girls handball team is pretty much guaranteed a spot in the upcoming ontario finals the defending provincial cham pions won their third straight tour ney of the season last weekend at centennial college in scarborough the only loss was a 123 exhibition decision to the ontario senior squad it was not too painful a loss be cause there are 10 markham grads on that team said brian skyving- ton who coaches the mdhs boys and girls with jonathan wardlaw leading the way for the seniors was jane robertson with a hat trick sandy mitchell netted a pair and singles came from kim and kathy sulman les aldcorn michelle notaro kathy durnan and heather graham kim black lisa colley and car rie lanning scored for mdhs markham opened the tourney by annihilating whitbys henry st high school 143 on hat tricks by local gymnast grabs top spot markhams simone senior showed em how its done by being the only local gymnast to grab top spot at last weekends metro east qualifying meet for the provincial championships the meet the first of several saw the markham gym club member earn thirds on the argo a bar and vault second on the beam and first on the floor she finished in first place with 35 points millikens cheryl hoof at was fifth overall in the same section with fourths on the floor and vault third on the beam and sixth on the bars danielle leier finished ninth overall after ninths on the bars and beam eighth on the vault and third on the floor kristen rasmussen led the club in jr b competition gaining a second overall by winning the vault routine and grabbing thirds on the bars beam and floor christine steer was third overall with thirds on the bars and floor second on the vault and fifth on the beam kim farwell and leigh smith were second and third overall re spectively in the jr a division michelle begay took third place in tyro b kelly grice and erin fleming shared top honors in the meet for the markham winstonettes grice finished second in argo a placing first on the bars second on the vault third on the floor and fourth on the beam behind her in third was lynsey coughlin first on vault and beam fifth on bars and erin egan in seventh place fifth on beam sixth on floor the other second placing went to erin fleming in thetyro b division she won the floor finished second on the beam third on the vault and fourth on the bars in the tyro a section unionvilles stephanie kruuk was ejghth with fifths on the vault and bars and sixth on the floor martha kotani was the top win- stonette in argo c competition she grabbed a fourth overall out of 20 gymnasts with a second on the vault fifths on the bars and floor and sixth on the beam her sister sally finished just be hind in fifth place thanks to a fourth on the floor fifths on the beam and bars denise miles was seventh overall primarily due to a fourth on the beam black colley and katie riddell sandra mills had two goals with one apiece coming from melissa joynt and cheryl and lynn taylor game three was an 85 exhibition win over belle river the final score was not indicative of the game as skyvington sent in his bench strength after the starters built up a 71 lead one of markhams toughest chal lenges ended 62 in its favor over hamiltons hill park high school one factor keeping mdhs in the game was netminder karina wat son who has earned a spot on the national roster she kept the half- time score at 22 until the locals could put together a strong second half black lanning and colley col lected two goals apiece markham completed the tourney by trampling western collegiate 12- 1 on twogoal performances by black colley lanning and brooke hewson mills riddell leslie han- ton and lynn taylor netted singles up up and away markhams dave vvhitt 20 looks like hes taking off for parts unknown while his newmarket opponent rears back to watch action took place as whitt was drving for a basket in wednesdays senior boys basketball game at markham district high school the locals pulled out an easy 8350 decision sjoerd witteveen stouffville wins tourney by kelly connelly magic posts and a headstrong brighton goalkeeper werent enough to cool stouffvilles neil patrick novice clippers in last weekends bancroft hockey tourna ment offensive persistancy paid of f in a big way for the locals they defe- volleyball girls make good older and more experienced competition finally did in the markham district high school mdhs junior girls volleyball team at last weekends emery collegiate tournament in weston york regions junior age group is 15 and under torontos is 16 and under and this differ- ence finally knocked mdhs out in the quarterfinals v but the girls still managed to win 10 of their 12 games over such teams as runnymede leaside and innisdalc before losing to gordon graydon high school in those games they just play ed beautifully said coach san dy strachan they were very calm coordinated and disci plined strachan admitted that the girls did much better than i anti cipated and if the york region i age groups change next year to match toronto then ill be able to keep this group for another season she singled out karen lanning as just about the best junior setter ive seen she has a court sense and is a real thinking player anne marie rankin im proved drastically since last year she has a tremendous net sense as far as tipping hitting and blocking go strachan also praised the efforts of carrie lanning and katie riddell both splitting their duties with the mdhs handball team chris newman and kathy and nancy dpnkersley ated three opponents including brighton to capture the a divi sion championship stouffville upended the pickering jets 21 and oshawa canadians 52 before peppering brighton 41 for the crown we were high in the dressing room before the final recalled clipper assistant coach bob mckin- non but then brighton scored first and we hit the goalpost twice geoff smith took a backhander and he hit the crossbar we were start ing to doubt ourselves mckinnon praised the undaunt- ing efforts of his middle players who regrouped to set up their high- scoring teammates dcfcncemcn jason reesor geoff smith and for ward john mckinnon were selected most valuable players in the tourney smith broke a twoperiod shutout against pickering in the opener he eluded the jets netminder in the third frame for a 10 lead team mate ryan jefferson widened the margin to 20 before the jets rallied back for one with 45 seconds left on the clock oshawa received shoek treat ment in game two when the clippers claimed an easy victory the cana dians had previously defeated stouffville in exhibition tangles and expected to win this meeting too smith captain phil pridham and forward roger mcmann gave their foe a rude awakening in the first period when they scored three quick goals oshawas attempt at a com eback was suffocated by jeffer sons two insurance markers the clippers trailed by one goal in the championship until smiths strong solo effort tied it up his teammates banged a couple pucks off brightons goalposts in the second period finally defenceman sian morri son set up uncinate jason reesor for what proved to be the winner smiths second goal of the game and pridhams shorthanded marker se cured the title prior to the tournament stouff ville was shaved 54 by king city in a friday evening exhibition match stouffville is 03 against the king boys this season
