the tribune 25000 copies vol 2 no 1 a metroland community newspaper saturday january 4 1986 20 pages 25 cents begins this spring ommunity postal service by jim thomas editor stouffville since the in ception of mail service in stouff- ville the town post office has been a meeting place for hun dreds of residents daily this practise for many will soon end canada post corporation plans to install dozens of community mail boxes in stouffville to offer greater customer conveni ence for the posting and pickup of mail while mayor fran sainsbury raises no objection to the planned changeover the proposed loca tion of some receptacles is a box of a different color she claims authorities went strictly by the book with insufficient thought for the concerns of residents at spe cific sites she said foundation holes have been dug in some inst ances she explained home owners will look out their front windows onto these boxes in stead they could have been moved a few feet to the left or the right mayor sainsbury is hopeful these situations can be corrected the community mail boxes will be placed on town property so the municipality has a direct interest in the project she ex plained several people have already complained she said the steel and aluminum units are weatherresistant and raised from the ground for easy access they will be located at frequent enough intervals to ensure that few if any customers need walk more than a block each box will have two diffe rent sized compartments one for letters and magazines and another for parcels there will also be a letter slot for outgoing mail the present post office wont be phased out however the mail ing of parcels the purchase of postage stamps and money orders will continue at this loca tion also cod orders and reg istered mail requirements will be handled here because a signature is needed in each community mail box letter compartments will be allo cated to individual residences parcel compartments however will be for communal use only the customer receiving a parcel will have access to the parcel compartment at that time if an item of mail is too large for a private compartment it will be left in the parcel section the key will be deposited in the private box a tag on the key will say which compartment to open a package will be left in the par cel compartment no longer than two delivery days it will then be transferred to the post office for pickup there and a notice of the transfer will be placed in the cus tomers private box community mail boxes will not be provided those customers living in close proximity to the post office each community mail box hol der will be given a set of two keys no duplicates are retained at the post office customers are advised not to lose or misplace them when a boxholder moves the keys must be returned to the post master when a compartment changes hands a new iock is in stalled and a new set of keys is supplied to the customer each community mail box hol der will be told by hisher post master when the service is to be gin the target date is sometime this spring possibly march dale wells community mail box co ordinator told the weekender in the area presently served by the stouffville post office in cluding the rural routes the post al code will change the present code loh 1lo will remain for about a year mr wells said so companies can use up their allot ments of stationery toboggan fun toogood pond in unionville was a popular spot left down the slope on the east side of the pond to toboggan over the christmas and new year as the snow swirls around them holidays here suzanne philip right safely guides her two children nona 2 and eric 4 sjoerd witteveen whats inside he volunteers charles morgan a busy guy at mdhs16 directory comment p4 entertainment p6 remember rick p7 cnib active po childrens page p10 sports p12 p13 classifieds p18 p19
