a4 tribune july 31 1985 s editors mail no respect dear editor as if the markham stouffville hospital board doesnt have enough problems now members have decided to move the site while the present location may not be in the centre of population whos to say what will occur twenty- five to fifty years down the road besides why should a hospital be centrally located with todays highspeed ambulance service the former property was only minutes away from stouffville unionville and the old town of markham what bothers me most is the fact the late arthur latcham donated the land in good faith mr latcham being the kind of person he was would be greatly disturbed to learn any change in locations had been approved angus austin rr 1 unionville assistance dear editor i wish to congratulate your newspaper on the story related to bernie dams formerly of stouffvil le and now residing in toronto in the interval between his attempted suicide and the tri bunes article i had often wondered about bernie and what had hap pened to him its nice to know that despite his handicap hes doing well and feel ing fine i would suggest that some time he be invited to address stu dents at stouffville dist secondary school who knows how many young people there are on the brink of selfdestruction bernie dams could through his personal experi ence save them from themselves eileen harrington main street harlequin enterprises ltd 6402100 6492292 roaming around day camp concerns by jim thomas editorials election in spotlight its official councillor fran sains- bury is going for the mayors job the decision announced thursday by the mayor was reluctantly confirmed by councillor sainsbury a phone call la ter she had wanted the public announce ment held over until august 1 a request we rejected we considered it of page 1 importance and published the story in the tribunes weekender july 27 the decision took no one by surprise not even mayor wood rumors had been making the rounds for days even weeks all that was required was confirmation out on the street theres mixed reac tion about fiftyfifty half the people we talked to feel mayor wood is doing a commendable job for the short time hes been in office and should be given an opportunity to serve one full term the other half say frans a fighter whose organizational abilities are such no one stands a chance bill ramps and bill hodgson will vouch for that at this point in time however were not certain of the planks in councillor sainsburys platform when these are revealed well be better able to assess the credibility of her credentials one thing sure shes well known across the entire town her elevenyear battle with the environment ministry has made certain of that shes a household name from stouffville through to cedar valley and from lincolnville to gormley we opposed the appointment of mayor wood the truth is we opposed the homeless need help as many as ten families could be look ing for temporary housing accommoda tion in stouffville during the next two to six weeks the problem has occurred in the estate development of wcstfield heights homes promised for august and september have been delayed by strikes in the building trades people whove already sold their properties are caught in between its no ones fault but extremely unfortunate heres how you can help if you have a spare room or two call the chamber of commerce hot line at 6405993 its only temporary but for families with no place to live it must seem like an eternity lets show our guests whitchurch- stouff ville has a heart and live up to our reputation as the friendliest town in ontario appointment of anyone we wanted the vacant mayorality position filled by election the same as in ward 2 council decided otherwise while our opinion on this issue hasnt changed we feel mayor wood in filling big shoes left by eldred king has done amazingly well and is steadily impro ving hes now less afraid to take person al stands and provide direction he makes an excellent meeting chairman while much attention in the weeks ahead will be focussed on the race for mayor should the incument decide to run a successor in ward 4 will share some of the spotlight in this instance we have no hesitancy in putting forward a nominee ged stonehouse is our choice not only has he earned this right but hell add a breath of fresh air to a sometimes dull municipal scene while in the past the electorate has shown a reluctance to support someone vaulting from political obscurity into the mayors chair or even running in a ward where heshe is not a resident stone- house fills all ward 4 requirements we urge him to go for it now before someone of lesser distinction tosses a hat in the ring all in all we see an interesting 3 vt months ahead election date is nov 12 day camps children love them at least most children do some go because theyve been there before others go because their friends go then there are those who are just plain bored doing something away from home is better than doing nothing at home our marylynn leans towards no 1 she wants to go because her friends go its a kind of status symbol one can imagine the questions the first day back at school first girl what did you do over the summer second girl i flew to hawaii with my cousin third girli i spent four weeks at our cottage on golden pond fourth girl i flew with my father to the calgary stampede mary- lynn i stayed at home my dad had to work to escape this kind of embarrassing situation our elevenyearold is going to camp in fact shes there right now i hope its because she wants to be and not because she has to be im not quite sure the location wont capture the hidden spirit of adventure kindled each summer in most kids for its only a stonesthrow to the north in whitchurchstouff ville the sites on the north sideof the vivian sideroad near pine orchard the week- long program july 28 to aug 2 comes under the sponsorship of the free methodist church everything included on the twopage brochure met our expectations of what a kids camp should be plenty of activi ties includinghorseback riding craft- making swimming basketball and soft- ball among items to bring was a bible and a notebook s leave behind the brochure read are comic books pets radios bicycles short shorts and bad habits the camp staff iricludesa director a nurse teachers counsellors and assis tants what more could anyone expect and ail for 65 including treats still for all the care and attentions well worry for marylynns never been away that much on her own sure shell be in the company of two friends amanda and tara but that doesnt mean theyll share the same cabin or even share the same activities shes concerned too for she knows that even at sleepovers a block down the street shes become homesick to ease her fears we accompanied her to the camp saturday evening fol lowing a quick inspection of the site- she seemed confident shed be able to cope we hope so status symbol or not i feel every boy and girl deserves a summer break otherwise the end result can be two months of boredom also it gets work aholic fathers like myself off the hook my conscience wont bother me quite so much when school resumes sept 3 apart from this the process is called growing up participating in new programs and making new friends will make her a better person still and all im enclosing a little note in her duffle bag that i hope one of the counsellors will accidentally pick up and read it says to whom it may concern marylynn is not our only child shes our sixth nor is she our only girl shes our third regardless shes spe cial because shes our last the rest are kind of grown up now more able to fend for themselves marylynn isnt while she wont appreciate this to us shes still a baby and we want to keep her this way just as long as possible i wouldnt want your job the respon sibility is far too great still im entrust- ing you with the responsibility oflooking after our little girl i hope im not asking or expecting too much for one whole week you will perform the role of father mother doctor nurse sunday school teacher storyteller biblereader craftinstructor referee umpire cook comforter lifeguard and bodyguard while grossly unfair i trust youre pre pared to take on all these things other wise i wouldnt be entrusting her to you just remember shes special the same as the other boys and girls in your care are special to their parents i will never understand why you or anyone like you would assume this obligation but im glad you have and ill tell you so when i see you face to face on friday in the meantime take good care of our baby shes our sixth our last and shes spe cial sincerely a doting father editors mail pollution is worse dear editor we live in a very scientific society- our accomplishments boggle the mind yet we have problems solving what would seem to be minor problems locally the pollution of musselmans lake is one this is not a concern that came about suddenly i can recall ron robb pre sent ward 2 councillor raising the issue at a public meeting in the high school several years ago it would appear to have worsened since then and authorities seem no clos er to a solution even worse they dont seem to know the source personally i just cant believe that with all the scientific resources avail able at the provincial level answers to our questions arent available i have my own opinions other people have theirs i feel the town must assert its authority and put pressure on the re gion otherwise this matter will drag on and on and musselmans lake will be come nothing more than a giant cess pool sincerely vivienne hancock rr 2 stouffville on the afternoon of july 21 stouffville firefighters and york regional police were called to the scene of an unautho rized demolition derby on private property at the corner of warden avenue and the stouffville road one of the vehicles involved burst into flames a writer to the tribune feels the organizer of this event should be assessed the expense rather than the taxpayers the cost has been estimated at close to 500 jim thomas who pays dear editor- i along with a dozen other spectators attended a car fire july 21 at a property near the cor ner of warden avenue and the stouffville road later in the tribune i read that a demolition derby of sorts had been held at this site and a blaze had resulted what people do privately is their business however when it in volves other people it becomes our business paying for police and fire calls is everybodys business i dont resent paying my share when payment is warranted in this instance its not i feel the cost should be assessed against the property owner for permitting an obviously hazardous activity with out municipal authorization and necessary safeguards to many suburbanites whitch- urchstouffvllle may be the sticks regardless there are rules and regulations to be followed when these are ignored problems result sincerely cecilia hartman rr 1 gormley
