secondary schools trio of tanya townend mary sled and camille rutherford competing in the ontario high school track and field championships was excit ing nerveracking and dis appointing the meet was held in eto- bicokes centennial park over the past weekend while townend and rutherford have tasted pro vincial competition before this was the first time sled a grade 10 student has competed at such a high level i was really nervous said sled in a recent inter view i was kind of psyched out with all the peo ple around ive jumped better she said of her long jump of 462 metres her personal best is 482 metres and while all three athletes admitted they have had better days jan mcbride the girls physcial education department head says just qualifying for the allontarios is an accomplishment to get all the way into the provincials is pretty ex citing stuff said mcbride to get there they are in the top24 in ontario i think the girls should be very proud of how theyve done she says according to mcbride none of the girls peaked at the provincials partly be cause of a busy schedule at school the week prior to the meet if i had jumped my best i would have been in the top- 10 said tovnend a grade 13 student i should have done better competing in the high jump townend managed to clear 15 metres at the pro vincials one centimetre short of her personal best the winning leap was a mark of 176 metres in the senior girls long jump rutherford wound up in seventh spot with a jump of 543 metres 30 cen timetres behind the winning effort i was upset said rutherford going into the last round i was in third place i didnt increase my distance and everybody else increased theirs i felt i could have done better said the grade 12 student but theres al ways next year all three athletes had no late last week when both squads were eliminated in the semi finals after compiling identical 42 records during the regu lar season both teams had set their sights on winning their respective cham pionships in their quarterfinal against langstaff sdss posted a 50 victory in the semis they were on the short end of a 31 decision to huron heights the eventual champs they got tworuns in the first two innings and we couldnt come back said john white the teams coach it was just one of those things although hes still con vinced his team should have won the championship white says huron heights had a good team there was no excuse for not winning after eliminating bayview on a come-from- behind effort in the quarter finals the girls team blew several leads in their semi final and wound up you get beat said the coach hockey age groups move up one year public schools do well at meet the ontario minor hock ey association which gov erns whitchurchstouffville minor hockey association and the metropolitan toron to hockey league will move their age groups up one year to unify the them with the rest of the country the minor adjustment means players who normal ly would move into the next level will remain in their current bracket for one more season the realignment has the novices at eight and nine years atoms at 10 and 11 peewees 12 and 13 bantams 14 and 15 midgets 16 and 11 and juveniles 18 and 19 track and field athletes from summitview and orchard park public schools turned in some ex- cellent performances at the area two track meet held in aurofa last thursday and friday in the final standings summitview wound up in third place while the team f romorchard park finished in eighth both schools will send the athletes that placed in the top three to the regional meet slated for today in au rora for summitview the highlight of the meet was the firstplace finish of the tyke girls team erin blenkhorn and jack ie chee led the tyke team winning 100 metres and standing long jump respec tively meanwhile summit- views atom girls and junior boys wound up in third place in the team competition julie sanford paced the atom girls with a firstplace finish in the running long jump and a third in the high jump michelle osborne earned second spot in the 400metre run dayle lewis led the junior boys team with a first and third in the high jump and 800metre run while mike bass posted a secondplace finish in the standing long jump in the triplejump todd stover had a third- place finish although her team didnt place at the meet michelle hoftsee finished first in the
