second to none those were the words used by mp anthony roman to describe markham fair 1984 mr roman former mayor of markham and chairman of the re gion of york officially opened the fair wednesday night assisted by president bryan armstrong bryans wife janie and their three children jason sarah and jessica jim thomas maple tree planted as living memorial stouffville a maple tree in memory of bruce carr of stouffville has been planted on the site of bruces mill conservation area this memorial a tribute to mr carr by members of staff is meant to recognize bis love for the place and his interest in activities there this interest was related mainly to the maple syrup operation that occurs there every spring he gave of his time as an active volunteer working shoulder to shoulder with employees on staff a suitable plaque has also been erected the gift was planaed as a surprise however when mr carrs condition deteriorated and re- admission to hospital was deemed necessary murray mcdowell the areas superintendent told him about the project he was pleased bruce carr was born in toronto the son of pre ston and florence richardson carr he farmed on the 7th cone of markham before moving to mount albert and then to pickering following government expropriation of their pickering property he moved to ninth line south stouff ville mr carr underwent surgery in january and again in june in the months between operations and since mrs carr found support through people like rev bruce aitken of melville united church and betty brown rr 1 unionville as well as neighbors and friends mrs carr cared for her hus band at home up until two days before his death mr carr was a man of great faith he attended church regularly and served as both an elder a steward and clerk of session when problems arose he was known as the peacemaker these and other personal tributes were recalled by rev gordon hunter and rev aitken at the funeral service sept 24 in melville united church the sanctuary was filled interment was at melville cemetery pallbearers werebrian and barry carr brian crozier murray mcdowell chuck kean and murray brown besides his wife the former lillian rate mr carr is
