john humphries receives the stouffville cup from mayor eldred king after his team defeated guildwood 20 in the soccer final sunday it was the panthers third tournament win ofthe season which gives coach alfons rubbens left good reason to smile jim holt the stouffville cup soc cer tournament never fails to produce drama and ex citement and as expected last weekend was no excep tion twelve highly- competitive teams entered for a crack at winning the prestigious silver bowl and after the din and dust of bat tle had setued the stouffvil le panthers emerged cham pions it was the second time in three years that the talented mosquito squad had won their own tourney the panthers were slug gish in their opener against woodbridge and were lucky to emerge 21 winners striker drae glover put the home side on the board with a nice 20 yard lob over the goaltenders head followed by woodbridge tying it up minutes later the winning goal came from gilles francis during a scuffle in front of the woodbridge goalmouth francis proved the most outstanding striker of the tourney following their weak per formance against wood- bridge the panthers hand ed north york cosmos an 8- 0 drubbing one of their big gest defeats this year whitby was next to fall giving the home side a 40 win and clearing the way for entry into the semifinals the panther defence took no chances in this one and the midfielders and strikers made the most of the oppor tunities handed to them having won their division with 14 goals for and only 1 against the panthers faced agincourt in the semi finals the wellrested agin court squad tended to take the panthers just a little too lightly and paid for their over confidence by getting blanked 70 gilles francis led the panthers with a hat trick the explosive hardworking striker earning every goal that came his way jamie grist twice found the net with drea glover and jeff heddle rounding out the score it was the easiest win of the tourney guildwood who defeated last years champions ajax in their semifinal took on the panthers in the final and what a great game it was the panther defence clamped down hard on two dangerous breakthroughs by agincourt and again it was francis who created the openings and excite ment around the opposition net his efforts were re warded with a fine goal in the first half travis white the panth ers super playmaker fol lowed by unleashing a 30 yard shot into the top of the net to wrap it up the panthers currently rated as being in the top ten in ontario in their division will be off to try their luck bauantrae club the bauantrae tennis club held its annual junior singles and doubles tourna ment on sunday the event produced some excellent performances in the finals with last years winner of the ladies singles carolyn bachand finally succumb ing to the relentless lobbing and passing shots of cathy graham graham won the first game a 76 tie breaker only to lose the second 36 by which time bachand who was visibly tired and had fallen twice at the net had given her best she went down 62 in the third game graham still lively and full of sparkle after the two hour dual was delighted with her win it was the first time she had ever beaten bachand a formidable net- player who cuts off anything and everything within reach graham confessed that she could not have hoped to beat bachand at the net re lying mainly on lobs and passing shots to pick up points the mixed doubles match stretched to a three hour marathon bachand and brent lowery teamed to de- feat graham and sean wynn 64 64 after losing the opening set 64 in the mens singles it was lowery and wynn in a drawn out game that had lowery emerge the winner wynn a good tactical play er was at a distinct dis advantage against the much taller lowery who has a first serve that could tear holes in a net wynn dropped his first game 61 but came back strongly for a hardfought 75 win in the second set he faltered in the third set when leading 53 allowing lowery to win the next four games and his second title of the day singles consolation win ners were shauna arcibald and danny wilson mixed doubles consolation win ners were the team of marc edwards and lisa jackson in the under 12 yrs categ ory gold medal winners were danny wilson sing les danny wilson and julie coleman mixed doubles silver medalists were de bbie kerr junior singles junior doubles easy win sophomore the expected dingdong battle between stouffvilles sophomore credit union gals and league leaders st rose on thursday night never materialised the game turned into a six in nings 204 route by the home side with no pitching staff available both pitchers were out with injuries the visitors lost the game on the mound bases on balls pro duced 8 unearned union runs and erratic pitching got them 9 free passes with no strikeouts julie thompson cleared the union bases with a mighty four run grand slam in the 6th shelley ferguson doubled in the 2nd for two rbis while terri piette and lorna tapscott both poked out singles to bring runners across the plate other singles came from cathy king and allison lowery st rose opened with a pair of runs in the first but from for gals then on in it was no contest union pitcher julie thomp son had little trouble con trolling the opposition bats and was ably supported by piette at 1st base piette tagged four runners in rapid succession candy brown and sheila fockler pulled of a sharp double play in the 5th the only excitement of the game st rose squeezed a pair of token runs in the 6th but their cause had league tournament at scar borough over the weekend opening on friday night the stouffville gals beat au rora in a close fought game that saw kelly watling hit a home run and stacey evans fire a tworun double for the game winning rbis against newmarket first place team in the northern division on saturday the saints held the champs to six innings before going down in the seventh lynda belisle hit a homer in this one the saints lost out 86 to markham in the double knockout tourney shawn morrison getting the only home run sponsored by spademan disposal the fledgling team has done well in their first season their record stands at 9 wins 6 losses and 1 tie to finish third in the north ern division the players would like to thank coaches terri sur- man and bob belisle for their time and on sunday evening stouffvilles senior squad could hardly come up with anything less than a win especially as the panthers were still on sidelines re ceiving their trophy as the game progressed the seniors missing a number of experienced players were forced into playing a mainly defensive game against the newmar ket visitors mike grist his first time in net came up with some fine saves to keep stouffville in the game the home side took a 10 lead when dan lamlcss passed to hank benders from a free kick benders rose to the occasion with a well directed header into the net on one of he few infre quent breakaways to the newmarket end dan and lukas lammlcv ombinfd acurate passing to give lukas free passage to ham mer in a low shot to end the first half 20 a penalty goal early in the second half brought new market back into the game but from then on in they had difficulty in finding the range gil francis gavin smith and benders along with rightack chris goodyear closed ranks and smothered any attempts by newmarket to penetrate the defence what proved to be the win ning goal came with 10 mi nutes left to play gavin smith taking a free kick outside newmarkets 18 yard line sent the ball through to benders who only had the goaltcndcr to beat newmarket pulled the score to 32 in the final 10 minutes of play but it was too little too late the american continen tal young riders cham pionships will be held at the international equestrian sport centre cedar valley from august 22 to 26 the five day event will fe ature some of the finest young riders in north amer ica with entries coming from 6 canadian provinces 10 us regions bermuda ecuador and puerto rico opening ceremonies are at 12 noon on wednesday aug 22 classes include dressage threeday eventing and jumping in dividual and team it is expected that over 200 riders and their horses will have to be boarded locally for the five days of competi tion the opening ceremonies will be conducted by the hon reuben baetz ontario minister of tourism and re creation representatives of national governments will also be in attendance hockey update at a recent meeting of the minor hockey association several items of interest to the general membership were discussed a level 1 coaches clinic will be held on oct 3 at latcham hall cost is 10 and all coaches of rep- teams are reminded that this clinic is a requirement in order to sign with the omha contact glenn or judy at 6404230 to register an intermediate club will be formed for the coming season age group is 18 to 25 inclusive and registration is 175 team
