a8 tribune aug 15 1984 editors mall bicycle safety dear jim i have been observing that bicyclists both of the mature and juvenile type are riding bicycles on sidewalks particularly along the main street in addition to being completely oblivious to traffic signs and rules of the road in general it is only a matter of time before someone meets with an accident and there have been some near misses two young boys riding west on rupert avenue approached the ninth line the first shot out onto the road in front of an automobile and was almost struck down when he realized the danger he almost lost complete control of the bicycle in his efforts to avoid collision all the second boy who managed to stop could say was i didnt do it the first boy was speechless and well he should be had either or both been struck down the anguish to the fami lies not to mention that of the innocent driv er would be of little consolation to anyone no doubt people would clamour for greater safety perhaps demanding that all traffic stop when children approach intersections so the pratical use of common sense safety could be removed as a childs responsibil ity you know like the school bus approach to things in the name of safety for stu dents that statement should stir up a few conscientious souls in indignation now getting back to bicycle safety it should be clearly spelled out that a bicycle is a vehicle that falls under the rules and regulations of the ontario highway traffic act to obey the law in the same manner as motor vehicles can you imagine the chaos if a person drove an automobile down a sidewalk that was intended for pedestrians or ignored traffic signs the police would be so busy that there would not be time even for a coffee break yet bicyclists not only in stouff ville are doing just that with out any repercussions except by possibly a few individuals who though displeased are not fully aware of their rights in this matter all citizens on the sidewalk are not as nimble and spry as they were in their pal my days so they deserve to have a safe place to walk fortunately when they were younger they had to learn and apply the rules of safety to their daily lives they must have learned their lessons well too because they are still with us some older citizens do not have the same ability to re cuperate from injury as quickly without complicatons so we should ensure that their privileges as citizens should not in any way be endangered proper equipment is necessary on bicy cles although few meet all requirements lights horns mirrors etc as stated in the traffic act it is interesting to note that skateboards are not legally permitted on roads because they lack a braking system as required by law people are going to become upset be cause the main street is busy and there fore dangerous so is rupert avenue i might add when common sense is cast aside it is indeed possible to ride along the main street as close to the curb as possible with additional caution when passing parked vehicles signs could be erected to designate a bicycle route as a reminder to motorists to share the road too this is done in toronto personally it is possible to reach any part of the main street through the use of back roads etc on either side of the main road the railway track makes it neces sary to come to the main street to go across the town however it might also be considered here that it is basically illegal to cross the railway tracks at any point other than at a designated crossing it may be a shortcut but it is still private property intended to keep people out and avoid accidents involving people and railroad equipment stouffville has many cyclists who use the streets for recreational jaunts people that you meet either riding or walking have a greeting of friendship cycling is a good sport and form of exercise but observe the rules of the road that needless accidents can be avoided sincerely john mcmurray elm road stouffville 19 passmore
