mayor eldred king who was presented with a cheque for 300 to wards the rec centre fund in accepting the donation mayor king com mended the association for its work and promised that stouffville s tradition of providing sports facilities would continue he also praised the intermediate girls team for their third provincial win in a row also the executive and officers of the association for their con tinued support and hard work the banquet is the one time when the teams can show their appreciation to their sponsors and this year was no exception there were small tokens of appre ciation from the teams for all the sponsors who attended there was also a special presentation made to eve brodie for her faithful and longstanding service as the associations secretary and fund raiser the presenta tion was made by teresa ewing trophies and awards to the winning teams were as follows junior championship geo ross photo and bunnys flowers senior championship a l m gardens senior a row bantam squad added to roster soccer rep teams complete tryouts in my opinion by jfaaholt what a grotty looking forecourt the front of the library presents any hope of intellectual activity is immediately dispelled the minute a visitor puts foot there discarded coffee cups bits of paper and debris of ah instant society offend the eye for the radius of a couple of hundred feet patches of grass as under nourished as that rust- ing skeletal goat parked on it struggle for exist ence amidst the rubbish whilst monstrous pieces of scrap iron dominate the area its a land scape that does nothing for civic pride surely someone is re sponsible for cleaning it up are we to go through the summer looking at this mess new field vital the soccer clubs plaintive cry for a new playing field may hope fully be answered at tonights meeting be tween the clubs execu tive and council on the other hand it may not time something the club does not have on its side is of vital import ance here the club is presently in limbo it has teams coming out of its ears and is hot sure whether it can find enough playing space to meet its com- mitments this season added to which is the pressing question of whether they are in a position to host a seg ment of the prestigious international robbie tournament if they turn it down they prob ably wont get asked a second time interna tional sporting organiza tions have a tendency to get uppity when snubbed to be asked to partici pate in the running of the robbie is quite an hon or for stouffville lets hope council bear it in mind when coming to a decision awards meaningless i am constantly amused by the number of awards handed out out at various sporting func tions at the end of the year without offending anyone something i do quite easily without trying too hard 1 would respectfully suggest to all sporting fraternities that the tradition of giv ing awards for the most trivial of achievements wiping your nose on a kleenex instead of your sleeve being able to tie yonr skates on properly etc etc should be given closer scrutiny there is absolutely no merit in it i know people who have cupboards full of awards they have no ih- trinsic value the awards not the people and range from long- forgotten hockey tourna ment plaques to aesthe- tically repulsive pieces of chromed plastic that read high single 1968 after a year or so the award is forgotten and it ends up in a box in the basement there is no other coun- try in the world with the exception of the good old u s of a where acknow ledgement of excellence has been replaced by recognition of mediocrity i ha ve mentioned it be fore and will undoubted ly do so again but when a consolation award is given to the best of a bunch of losers and the finalist runnersup get nothing especially in tournament play then there is something radi cally wrong how about the ball clubs starting a new fashion to the winner the spoils if you dont win you dont get any thing just for once take all the money trophies etc and give them to the best man team or whatever and let all the rest strive just that little harder it could be catching with the soccer tryouts completed coaches can now start building their teams with a series of pre season exhibition games commencing at ballantrae park next weekend the tryouts were again a great success the royals did everything a coach could expect of them three solid wins against woburn cosmos and agincourt has shown a renewed enthu siasm by the older age the goodwood public school wrestling team finished in fourth place at the durham junior boys wrestling finals held recently back row left to right principal richard hannah jason feddema david chant ron woolhead jeremy graham and brent gould middle row left to right brad miller jason underwood scott koogje david martin and jeff williams front row left to right rob armitage greg irwin and john humphries absent mem ber dan humphries audrey green group the panthers have com pleted a very successful series last sunday saw them try their hand against a powerful guidwood team however surprise of the weekend was the cougars 3- 1 win over the willowdale blues the cougars put on a skilful performance that should please coach roy houston no end the team is improving rapidly and obviously intent on being recognized trentadues tigers are also improving however fitness and skills seem to be the immediate stumbling block here the junior girls and senior mens teams have also had their first workout both teams are showing plenty of enthusiasm and the coaches are expecting a good season big surprise on sunday morning was the appear ance of over 20 bantam play ers for the bantam tryouts obviously the wssc has the makings of a competitive team with these enthusias tic players coach ken nichols must consider him self lucky to get such a plum on his first outing with wssc this saturday will see the stouffville allstar squads meet tough competition from the maple leaf club games will be played at ballantrae park on satur day and sunday from 930 am through 5 pm ready for ball season although player rosters are not yet completed a number of teams still have changes to make in their lineup the york major mens slowpitch league will comprise the same teams as last year buttermakers betz pools kerry indus tries unidnville calathum- pians budget towing and tonys the buttermakers have made changes this year although coach wayne emmerson is being secre tive about his lineup emmerson hopes to give betz a good run in the oasa playoffs this season and according to him he will tell all when his new play ers arrive prior the raiders tournament on may 19 all he will will say at the mo ment is is hopefully they whoever they are will provide us with some big bats the buttermakers will again host the canada day tournament thirty two teams will compete for a tot al purse of 2200 during the threeday celebrations their opening game is on may 15 at stouffville betz pools are reported to have more players than they can handle but one of their big hitters brad steel will not be with them this year joining marvins boys will be ex tony bob neely markham tonys have lost a few players from last years roster however the losses should not change the overall strength of the team the club has also appointed two new stouff ville coaches gary frazer and bob dart kerry industries are re ported to be strong this sea son they could well cause a few upsets when the oasa playdowns come around unionvilles calathum- pians and budget towing both good tournament teams will again provide strong competition to the top boys this season gym flooded indoor sports at sdss will have to be curtailed for the next few weeks possibly un til next term due to the frac ture of a water valve that flooded the school gymna sium over the week end the mishap occurcd only hours after the final per formance of music mania the show had played to a full house of over a thousand people only hours before officials of the york board of education have already inspected the dam age but will have to wait for the floor to dry out before repairs are started
