wants to be a veterinarian as proof of her interest in animals she has two cats one rabbit and a dog- plus five chickens that may or may not be considered as pets cathys our girl next door one of three in the family of norman and lynn craig cathy has two sisters susan 17 and sharon 13 her mothers a teacher on the staff of claremont public school a student in grade 10 at pickering high cathys major extracurricular interest is volleyball she maintained an honors svanding in her first year at phs and hopes to continue at that academic level in 1984 science and math are favorite subjects holidays have included vacation trips south to florida and east to prince ed ward island some day she wants to visit sweden yes cathy has a boyfriend hes darin cordes also a student at picker ing high munity the writer filed the following story since cathy bartolic left her family farm in canada to begin a sixmonth stint in new zealand life has been a whirl of sheep deer tractors and hills and for the first few days after the 23- yearold agricultural trainee arrived on the oropi farm of jan and colin rogers she froze coldin october yes- she said back home were spoiled most of the animals are kept in side but in tauranga most of the work is outside cathy also spent much of her first few weeks catching up on sleep farm work is more physical she said and the hills so many hills i cant be lieve it im sure becoming more physical ly fit tanned fit and friendly cathy is one of 80 agricultural trainees staying in the north island and taking part in a program arranged through the international agri culture exchange association in ontario she completed her bachelor of science in agriculture degree at the uni versity of guelph finding a job after majoring in crop science cathy hopes to find a job with a seed or fertilizer company and eventually have her own farm the main difficulty for women in this field is finding a job with the big com panies she said theres no problem for women to obtain the necessary education and qual ifications but some firms still hang- onto the idea that farmers dont like to see women on their properties selling the pro duct they think farmers wont believe that women know what theyre talking about thankfully though this attitude is changing she said as more women are hired theyre pro ving themselves equally capable and usually do a better job than men differences in lifestyles between the two countries are many however for cathy the new experiences shes encountered since her arrival have been exhilarating many things are new to melike the deer and the hundreds of sheep before coming here i never worked with sheep we have a few in canada but for me its a new experience it was amazing watching the shearers in action and mustering the sheep is also something new cathy said colin and jan rogers had warned her about the hills but after walking up and down to muster i was ex hausted cathy said shed never worked with deer before either before returning to canada in april cathy hopes to enjoy a 10day vacation in the south island with several other agri cultural trainees on a similar exchange i want to visit as much of new zealand as possible she said people here in oropi have been very friendly theres great community spirit i want to see if its the same everywhere she said had on north amer ican youth going back to the mid 50s
