noise allegedly caused by ethnic groups at green river park the met ro toronto and region con servation authority is en ding their lease as of dec 31 1983 ever since we had it the park there has been problems off and on with noise and we did every thing we could to terminate the problem said don prince manager of prop erties and administrative services for the authority the authority leased a piece of land and this year we will not be renewing it according to prince the authority had leased half of the 63 acre park located on hwy 7 in pickering from the ontario land corpora tion on dec 29 1978 at that time the land was already being leased to a family operation under the name of e moumouris and the authority decided there was no reason to discontinue it at that time the complaints have been mounting for years said glenn bainbridge president of the green riv er community association things have come to a head unfortunately for them they had the park at that time bainbridge explained that residents were com plaining about noise pollu tion and traffic there wasnjt just one or two people who were com plaining stated prince he also said the main problem was amplified music speaking on behalf of his parents spiro moumouris said they rented the park out to approximately 20 different macedonian groups during the summer months and those groups would hire bands to play he said the park was only used on sundays and it opened around 9 am the bands local artist opens gallery would begin around 2 or 3 pm and finish about 8 pm the only way we could get bookings was with music said mr moumouris the only way it could function was with amplified music however townof picker ing councillor norah ston- er an executive on the au thoritys board said the lease did not allow ampli- fied music although he signed a leg- al document he wasnt pre pared to be bound by it said stoner prince said there had been a number of meetings held with both the commun ity and tenant to resolve the problem but a compromise couldnt be reached they told us they doubted whether they could help us out said mr moumouris he his father was very upset bainbridge refused furth er comment as far as im concerned the matter is closed according to prince the authoritys executive com mittee gave the final verdict on october 5 it was the de cision of the authority to not renew the lease on the land following the final deci sion three buildings burned down in the park and the possibility of suspected arson is currently under in vestigation by the fire mar shals office what upsets me right now is someone committed arson on the property the day after the decision stated stoner theres no doubt it was arson stoner said she is still waiting for the fire mar shals report on theinci dent- the only people who would have gained from arson were the ones who wanted it closed said mr moumouris they wouldnt have known of the decision at that time we didnt find out until a week later the future use of green river park is unknown said prince however there have been suggestions to create a hiking trail or to plant trees he said the issue is still under debate utica restoring the old to hew is what
