r i f sa4 wednesday september 14 editors mail a 1983 v v what is it dear mr thomas i wish to thank jim holt of your sports staff for explaining all about the two ornaments on the north east corner of market and some- rrville streets in stouffville however im still not sure what theyre all about what they repre sent maybe someone in authority knows no onethat ive talked to does im glad to see taxpayers money didnt provide these objects to me theyre monuments to stupid ity but then im only an ordinary guy whose opinion shouldnt count sincerely gordon moore main street stouffville dear mr thomas from the several letters that appeared in the tribune of sept 7 it would appear that in the john lord vs the firemen controversy everyone forgot about the unfortun ate victim in the case alfie the cat whos to speak for him perhaps mr lord was negligent in not keeping his pet under lock and key perhaps the fireman should have somehow avoided the animal to me these are human errors that will never be settled through letters to the editor but what about alfie had he no feelings has no one feelings for him this cat enjoyed life as much as any living creature be he a friend on four legs or two doesnt he deserve some recogni tion for what he was and now isnt i think so too often the human element takes top priority over everything else to me everything that lives and breaths is important be it a child a crow or a kangaroo i shud der at the thought of mans in humanity to animals alfie wasnt just a cat nor is any of natures gifts just a dog or just a bird theyre all part of this wonderful world in which we live its time we learned to appreciate them more sincerely joan philips rr 3 stouffville s w h liljuwjmmllmlm 1 i ri gonna be r 11he next fair queen im between 18 and 24 in whitchurchstouffville par ticularly at the resort centre of mussel- mans lake although the scientific reason for so many gull deaths in- so short a time hasnt yet been proved a bacterial fun gus seems likely its natures way of thinning out their numbers and its ab out time seagulls have become so numerous theyre a nuisance these winged scavangers are every where everywhere theres a morsel of food to be found and since the species is protected mother nature must step in to protect- her own otherwise most will starve wed be the last to suggest an open season on gulls weve fought too long and too hard for no hunting edicts on moose and deer to authorize a turn around and let man take his toll this latest episode at musselmans lake is in our opinion proof positive that human interference in natures law of things is unnecessary survival of the fittest will maintain a proper balance without med dling by man for its he thats done more to upset natures balance than to correct it i was hauled up on the carpet thursday not a red carpet either thank heaven even if thebroadloom within the board room of the ontario press council had been dusty pink id have figured the cards were stacked against me the location of this informal tete-a- tete was the lavish royal york hotel giving the impression no doubt to folks not acquainted with the business that the print media is actually rolling in dough this false front was revealed when the shoeshine boy i always have my shoes shined when i visit the big city discovered one lace broken and holes in both my soles my reason for for being there was sim ple i inferred at least he complainants claimed i inferred that members of the yorkdurham association of the ndp were nothing but a bunch of commun ists hardly an honest assessment of an editorial i penned back in april under the heading antimissile meeting a prorussian rally i ask you would i the editor of the stouffville tribune paint an entire ndp riding membership with the same red brush certainly not if i did id only be smearing myself because believe it or not i actually voted ndp- once when former councillor merlyn baker ran on that ticket i tossed him my support i even wrote a column telling all and sundry why id suddenly switch ed not that it did him any good he still lost but he made a creditable showing against formidable opposition this goes to prove im no ndp hater but i do hate communism and all its dictatorial policies stand for because of this deep- seated feeling it made my blood boil to sit in on an ndp meeting and hear the united states our ally friend and neigh bor criticized by a guest speaker while a dozen or so puppetheads bobbed up and down in agreement despite the fact as a media man my temperament has an extremely low boil ing point i was still seething three nights later when i wrote that editorial and by jim thomas- unless forced to do so i offer no apolo gies i think it was johnny james publisher of the bowmanviue statesman who once said the best editorials are written by angry editors i firmly believe this and i fit this characterization perfectly when i said what i did however it wasnt meant as a personal attack against the party heck some of my best friends two or three are new democrats but it infuriated me when in my opinion the russians were made to look like white- winged angels and the americans like- carnivorous vultures thats political poppycock i want no part of it regard- less of what the press council decrees the presentation of evidence while governed by rules and regulations was very informal they party representa tivesj told their side we the publisher and i told ours the council then posed a few questions and the ordeal was over heck we even rode down on the same elevator as for the outcome well all be a little wiser at the end of october maybe halloween night rv smile awhile im a working girl now by audrey green a proud legion project the stouffville legion branch 459 and the stouffville legion ladies auxili ary have every reason to voice pride over their latest accomplishment the remodelling of their hall and the burning of the 25000 mortgage required to do the job the improvement unveiled for a first time saturday night- is worth every cent its beautiful a few years ago borrowing money for such purposes was tantamount to sin even today the payasyougo policy is practised by many but not by most we live in different times enjoy it while you can were told life is far too short while indebtedness has been the ruination of many families not so orga nizations in most cases the exact oppo site is true it represents a challengea challenge to complete the project and pay it off as quickly as possble the stouffville branch of the cana dian legion has done just that and now members can enjoy the benefits of their accomplishment the tribune on behalf of the community extends congratula tions beer is it necessary an oldfashioned barnraising will be held saturday on the grounds of the whitchurchstouffville museum at van- dorf this event plus a beef barbecue and dance will be fun and educational the raising of a barn is uncommon to day parents should accompany their children to the site so they can see how its done theres one disturbing feature about this project town council has approved the sale of alcohol on location why did a beer garden go handinhand with barnraisings a halfcentury ago we think not nor is it necessary today- yet permission appears almost automatic for a change let the townanswcr such applications with a resounding no the event should still prove suc cessful without john barleycorn along to give it a boost on this occasion its only a barn thats being raised nothing else what happened to summer it seems each year this most pleasant season flies by faster and faster and before you real ize it the calendar pages have flipped from july to september and the back-to- school routinue has set in as the fall arrived i encountered an unexpected blow suddenly the security i had known for the past 18 years was yanked from beneth my feet i was no longer returning to the same old routine i had depended on year in and year out ever since i can remember school was a part of my everyday life as far back as kindergarten i also knew whether i liked it or not it was some thing i had to do i can still remember those first few days they seemed so mean and so cruel because they took me away from home i enjoyed school once i became accus tomed to it but what bothered me was the break from the security of my mother i can recall mom taking me to register for kindergarten classes but that was it she told me from that point on i had to learn to stand on my own two feet she sent me on my way alone the six- block walk to public school was like the last mile and since i was a shy kind of kid i decided school wasnt my cup of tea i would rather stay home and help mom however moms ideas were diffe rent then mine i can remember her shoving me gently out the door i stood 1 forquite a long time huddled beside the i wall crying but mom grit her teeth and ignored me because she figured if she gave in it would be twice as difficult the next time eventually i went but not without protest the next major change to which i was exposed was the transition from public school to junior high at that point it was difficult because aside from school i was going through that funny-growing- up period called adolescence unfortu nately my studies suffered because i was so busy learning about myself and what i considered life to be all about after junior high the next big move was to high school where i had longed to be for so long during my five years there i experienced many ups and downs however most of the time it was fun i learned to grow and develop my own identity i gained new friends and had more cares than worries when i reached grade 12 i was be coming tired of beating the books i felt the time had come to spread my wings and become independent it was time to find a job little did i know how hard employ- ment was to come by back in 1978 i wasnt satisfied working fulltime at a job that only paid the minimum wage with absolutely no future so after much soulsearching i decided to complete r grade 13 and take things from there after finishing high school i entered community college but i really wasnt too sure where twas headed i also wasnt prepared to spend thousands of dollars for a university education when i knew i didnt know what i wanted to do when i found my nitch in journalism i devoted much time and a lot of hard work to prove to myself and those around me that i was good and i would eventually make it to the top- i graduated with honors and three scholarship awards under my belt but they didnt compensate the fact there was still another change in life fast approaching this summer when i started working fulltime it hadnt hit me that i had actually completed school for good and this was the start of my new career however now the time has come when students have returned to school to hit the books and i am still working its a really strange feeling when the security which has faithfully protected me during the years is wiped out now responsiblity takes charge and a new section of my life evolves school has ended and so has an era of my life i may return to take university or col lege courses at night because i believe education is an excellent stimulation but i know time will never take me back as it was before i i guess its all part of growing up but its also a reminder of how fast life pas ses you by im excited about my new found future and what it holds for me but im also sad a chapter of my life has finished just as fast as the summer has
