mm sb8 wednesday april 20 1983 editors mall war children attending the mother goose nursery school in stouffville were taken on a tour of the firehall last week with chief walter smith serving the dual role of guide and in formation officer here he instructs fouryearold katie blenkhorn on the proper use of stations communica tions system jim thomas fiveyearold jeremy clubine has a little bit of grow ing up to do before he can all a firemans coat but some day their sizes will even up one thing sure the water wont run down inside his rubber boots jim thomas dear sir it is to be hoped tbat the indignant surge of parochial conservatism on the part of the tri bunes editor con cerning the anti- cruise rally in ux- bridge will not blind the papers readers to the fundamental issue of concern in the matter that the very possession of and the willingness to contemplate the use of such weapons by any group or state ideology not withstanding should be construed not only as a threat to our existence but also as an affront to our sense of morality if hope for the fu ture remains with the young then the young must be pre sented with ques tions that provoke thoughtful contem plation of the com plexities of human society at every opportunity the moral ambiguity of armaments of all kinds is just such a question we have estab lished schools in our society for the education of the young not for their limitation the de velopment of the ability to make re sponsible and moral decisions is the lynch pin of this edu- cational process the question of the morality of nuclear armaments belongs in the open forum of a democratic school system sincerely roger glazin member district 13 ontario secondary school teachers federa tion let youth be involved sine stevens tells all lauds mulroney yorkpeel the hon sinclair stevens mp york peel was a strong joe clark supporter when mr clark was chosen leader of the federal progressive conservative party at a convention in ottawa this time around however mr stevens has thrown his support behind candidate brian mulroney in a prepared state ment to the tri bune the local member outlines his reasons why i will be support ing brian mulroney for leader of the progressive con servative party all of the progressive conservative dele gates from the rid ing of yorkpeel and all of the alternates will be supporting brian to me there are several valid reasons to support brian as our leader for the 80s in our present economic morass a businessman should be welcomed to help solve many of our problems which have been compli cated by so many misguided political interventions a businessman with labor relations as his speciality is particularly needed today with so much confrontation among the business community labor and the govern ment when brian speaks about gov ernment spending the invisible mor tage of canadas youth and calls for more responsible government for restraint i could not agree more the public ge nuinely wants a new image hopefully if we choose a new leader so may the liberals and the new democratic party the advan tage of such a new image was demons trated in saskatch ewan last year the saskatchewan progressive con servative party holdling 17 seats compared to 44 for the new democra tic party chose grant devine as their leader with out ever having held elected office not even municipal the 37 year old devine rode into the pre miers job taking 55 of the provinces 64 seats it is time we selected a leader from quebec to be a national party in canada for 116 years and to have never elected a quebec leader is truly remarkable brian gives us an opportunity to break this tradition following my de cision to not enter the progressive conservative lead ership race i have met with the york- peel progressive conservative asso ciation executive and with our dele gates and alter nates in a questionnaire circulated several weeks ago among the executive and a wide range of vo ters the respon dents were asked to grade on a scale of 010 what they thought of each of the declared or proposed candi dates under seven headings how do you assess the candidates regional appeal are the candidates biling ual french several solos accompanying himself on the guitar residents were thrilled with mr chongs presentation dear sir a propos the whole topic of the cruise testing program and nuc lear proliferation i feel strongly that the implications of this sjrograip should be discussed in our high schools as the parent of a student at sdss i find it difficult to understand how this topic could possibly be avoided it is the mandate of our edu cational system to encourage informed opinion we have no thing to fear in hav ing both sides of any question presented to our students what is to be feared is uninformed opin ion and in this case the lack of thought ful consideration about the morality of nuclear prolifera tion dr eoin mackay april 13 tribune supported the idea that the issue of nuc lear disarmament be placed on a bal lot that would give each of us an oppor tunity to express an opinion hopefully an informed one sincerely kathleen glazin fairview avenue stouffville the need never vfifllluej si
