in- terestsof jennie mann this years president of the ladies section of markham fair as well each has a special meaning for her jennies first exhibit at the fair in 1971 was a guinea pig when she was living in scarbor ough and the entry was made as a result of her membership in the markham poultry and pet association in 1972 she moved to markham and through the invitation of mrs kay thompson ladies president in 1974 began to work in the needlecraft ex hibits that year she exhibited a stuffed fabric handmade frog and won the class about the same time- she began a new hobby cake decorating and after much prac tice became sufficient ly adept at the skill that she provided the first ever cake decorating demonstration at mar kham fair born in essex eng land jennie came to canada with her pa rents who incidentiy also live in markham in 1950 her father was employed by the minis try of correctional ser vices and as aresult she lived in many communities in ontario besides her other activities mrs mann has had a wonderful time working with young people at the fair in 1977 following the death of miss olive shadlock a director of the fair who had been in charge of the 18 and under exhibits for many years jennie accepted the role of chairing that commit tee these exhibits in volve preschoolers mentally handicapped youngsters and high school students mrs mann who is a pleasant person with an active sense of humor recalled an in cident when she was exhibiting a peruvian guinea pig at the fair it had very long hair and i was holding it in my hand combing out the hair when this man came up to me and said why are you combing your wig in such a pub lic place lady and i admit for a minute i was stuck for an answer jennie is strong in her praise for the peo ple of the fair- i will always re member the fellowship and support of the members when roy roy thorpe her pre vious husband and a former fair director passed away she said in 1981 jennie mar ried gerald mann secretarymanager of the fair and was of great assistance to him when he carried out his duties as president of the a and b fairs asso ciation that year jen nie has two daughters dawn and wendy who are also active in fair committees she feels her year as president of the ladies section has been full and worth while to date although she has a number of things yet to accom plish this year there willbe a new class of exhibit for procelain lace dolls these are handmade delicately created chinalike dolls and must be seen to be fully appreciated there will also be a number of demonstra tions in the homecraft buildinjufeaturing cakedecorating quilt ing bees and other in teresting domestic sci ence activities there will also be food pro cessing demonstra tions the tribune wednesday september 29
