u the tribune wednesday september 22 1982 editors mail dear mr thomas i i- i last spring i was honored when an editorial in your newspaper recom- mended me as a possible candidate for town council i havegiven the matter much thought and have decided not to let my name stand atthis time this decision is based primarily on familiy ties however i do not want our present council to feel they are unchallenged be cause of their perfect record i do feel the current issues require the knowledge and experience that their twoyear term has given them in particular im thinking of the water problem the dulverton de velopment and the recreation complex the recreation complex is the issue ab out which im particularly concerned i feel i can do more on this project as a member of the parks and recreation board than as a councillor i hope the complex is an important issue to other voters now is the time to be heard council and our board of educa tion trustee must be aware also that many of us are in favor of this buildings completion within the next threeyear term of office acclamations must provide us with positive action on positive issues i promise you mr kamps ill be watching i may want your job in 1985 sincerely daphne goldman elm road stouffville success dear mr thomas we dont have anyone enrolled in the stouffville christian school were quite satisfied with our childrens progress where theyre now attending however the amazing increase in enrollment at this comparatively new institution makes one wonder what theyre doing thats so right or what were doing thats so wrong quite obviously the christian school system is filling an education void in this community sincerely darryl cooke whitchurehstouffvillc 8s3 sorry coach i lined up with that cow and she moved in io i i business another stouffville businessman turned the keyin his frontdoor last week rickashton of jakes jeans found he could make a go of itv t no longer v i 5 whats happening here is sad rick and tothers like him deserved a better fate hes not the first to call it quits and he wont be the last unfortunately few if any tears will be shed lover the demise of this business or othersthat may follow faithful patrons will quickly turn elsewhere they always do however we maintain that a municipality is only as strong as its commercial core if it dies so docs the jtowri for years now retailers here have been pin- jning their hopes on the 500home dulverton development it would seem unlikely now that anything will be done before spring and even if the subdivision becomes a reality this fall theres no guarantee these newcomers will shop at home however stouffville merchants aware of the problem shouldnt lay down and die if they doi theyre already dead they should take a cue from their commercial cousins on the main street of markham and battle back the chamber of commerce workingln close cooperation with council should prd- vide the lead one means at their disposal is through re- zoningfrom commercial to residential addi tional rental accommodation should be made available by whatever means possible bring in the people and some increase in business willfollow at present we see too many for rent signs in doors and windows with no tak ers thats because wouldbe tenants are afraid to take the chance the priority rcquire- ment is to rentto live the town should do all it can to meet this need i love sciencefiction i always have ever since my buck rogers comicstrip days ive been intrigued by the fact there could be people out there whirling around the uni- verse watching our every move while i dont get carried away to the point of believing every mysterious light is a flying saucer i like to think there are some things we still dont understand and that maybe just maybe theres a- superior intelligence some where that could put we earthlings to shame i guess it boils down to what we dont know is far- more exciting than what we do thats the way it is with me anyway on occasions if i can stay awake through the news weather and sports i watch the late show on tv but only if its sciencefiction and onceinawhile theyjiave some dandies like when worlds collide it came from be neath the sea the giant crab monsters and so onreal uplifting stuff- the script is always predictable but the camera work in most instances is excellent the profession als it seems can do all sorts of tricks using fish monkeys frogs bees ants and spiders as subjects once in a long while i coax my wife into watching one of those queer things thats what she calls them with me however she seldom lasts past the first commercial falling into a deep sleep after about ten minutes while it irritates me somewhat to see her snoozing peacefully while godzilla disintegrates the empire state building ive never yet dared wake her up im afraid she might disintegrate the tv set but talk as you like the unknown is catch ing the imagination of millions and making millionssuperman i and ii are prime exam ples another still in the making- that could do well is strange invaders much of the foot age in this one was shot at claremontwith many of the participants being local residents its release is scheduled for march of 83 however the movie currently sweeping the country is an extraterrestrial masterpiece called etitoret if youll pardon the pun is one of the few made for both adult and child audiences parents can actually take their kids to this one without being verbally and sexual ly embarrassed out of their seats marylynn our youngest is a victim of et fever shes seen the movie three times and would make it thirtythree if wed let her go we may give in once more et is all she talks about she has an et record an et sweater an et coloring book an et doll and enough et cards to choke a horse some of her friends she claims are even better off the little guyfrom outer space is a status symbolby which kids judge each other and each others parents its lough keep ing pace the latest gimmick is a recipe for et cookies marylynn and her mother have manufactured so many of these ill soon look like a chocolate chip the strange thing about this extra terrestrial being is the fact hes actually home ly almost scarey but he sort of grows on you when you see him through the eyes of his newfound friend call it love at second sight while i havent been bitten by the etbug at least not to the extent of our youngest daugh ter ive proved my pointscience fiction is for real millions of little kids cant be wrong one big kid either in my opinion build our own ree centre by jim holt j too few participants r thanks to the enthusiasm of a small group of people the terry fox marathon of hope was revived in stouffville sunday organizers did a marvellous job publicizing the event selecting and marking she route and recognizing the participants the briy unfortunate thing too few people took r we had predicted five hundred we had rhoped for one thousand the turnout fell far short of minimal expectations j last year considerable regret was express ed after the fact that no walk was organized here so several ladies including dixie sellers beulah king barb schell and others set out to make it happen in 82 they started as early as two months ago while adults turned out in goodly numbers the young people to whom terry fox meant so much stayed awaywhy would this be no one rshastheanswer jfm six mile walk on a beautiful afternoon is 1 not an arduous chore some folks jog half that distance every morning however the chal lenge sunday obviously wasnt there the hero worship has waned how quickly we forget with the federal and provincial goverments slashing subsidy payments and grantsit has become more and more fashionable for orga nizations to turn- to the public sector when trying to raise funds for pet projects openhearted whitchurchstouffville is a prime example of possible overkill in the latest appeal to our pocketbooks there is in fact a strong possibility that our charitable instincts may be quenched forever v the latest ventures a new arena and hospit- al requiring millions of dollars from the public purse- are expecting too much of a long- suffering populace that is continually being asked to give give arid give again just how much money do fundraising organizations think we have v the problem tame under discussion last weekend whenin company with a few long time residents we had our weekly meeting at what is euphemistically called the ninth line t i v j- it was wayne nugent who dropped the idea in our laps you know he said when the guys came back from the last war there wasnt much money around to put up a hew legion hall so they did it themselves and they did a pretty good job too he concluded the proposal was so out of line with our cur rent way of doing things we had to stop for a minute and think about it however when the suggestion finally hit home all agreed that if everyone contributed something whether it be brains or brawn towards the building of a new arena we could have it up and finished within eighteen months by something we meant a little more than money labor and time are whats needed if the town supplied the mate rials and machinery then the people could do the rest after much discussion wc all agreed to do our bit frank haylow and blair bangay both in the construction business and longtime stouffville residents declared theyd shoulder their share of the load if the town decided to go it alone wayne nugent said hed carry blocks and i said id help lay them dave conneu a teacher on the high school staff and living in uxbridge was equally enthusiastic just think of it if everyone whos interested in seeing a new arena built and everyone says he is gave eight hours of his time each weekend we could cut the cost by more than half its worth a thought the possibility of helping ourselves was brought home even more when i attended the sodturning ceremony sept 12 for the new st marks parish church looking at the faces of those attending one could not help but notice how proud each was and rightly so for these honest folk it was the moment of truth a tremendous achievement for a congregation who had helped themselves and not gone cap- inhand to everyone in sight for financial aid discussing bur proposal with mayor eldred king who seems to feel this community can support both a recreation complex and a hos pital he assured me the town would still qual ify for a 50 wintario grant if it went it alone but it would take an awful lot of organizing he said frankly i think its a great idea now if we can only get 100 supportfromeveryoneelse
