velvet wideman cathy graham was the recipient of this years academic award at the graduation ceremonies at ballantrae public school trus tee harry bowes was on hand to make the pre sentation and congratulate cathy on her achievement sandy clee 14 of rr4 stouffville received the school citizenship award for best ail- round student at the graduation ceremonies held at whitchurchhighlands public school last month jim holt july pool activities honored by governorgeneral courage bravery york region constable donald clark of the york regional police department awoke earlyin an otta wa hotel room the 33yearold police officer knew the day to be very special he dressed with care his uniform pressed and his boots gleaming in another roomitwo newmarket men 38- yearold william doran and his brotherinlaw frank armstrong were also awake and ap plying extra attention- to their dress all three men had a very special appoint ment with a very spe- cial man they were scheduled to meet canadas governor general edward schreyer and mrs schreyer to receive medals of bravery it all started two years ago march 31- 1980 when constable clark was on patrol near hwyll he saw a car swerve at an in tersection overturn and burst into flames the york regional police officer radioed for ontario provincial police ambulance and fire department help then ran tothe burning vehicle two passing motor ists frank armstrong and bill ddrah also rushed to the scene to offer aid and between them pulled the driver from the burning wreckage the danger of explo sion was great as the three men struggled to rescue 21year tim wright of newmarket two of wrights friends died in the infer no when efforts to re- suce them failed constable clark and the two other men had been driven back by the flames last tuesday the ottawa skies were gray and the river which bears the same name appeared leaden under the weight of dark clouds as a chartered bus drove clark doran and armstrong through the gates ofrideau hall the three men were among 28 medal reci pients from across canada accompanied by their families the threesome rode throughthe imposing gates of the official resi- dence amid pomp and ceremony scarletcoated men- wearing uniforms of the governor generals foot guardsstood stiff ly at attention as the medal recipients and their families were escorted by aides up the redcarpeted stairway to the white arid gold ballroom where the ceremony took place it was an imposing sight everywhere glit tering crystal chande- liers flashed in the light portraits of for mer kings and queens lined the walls and a band of the guards played music to enter tain until the arrival of the governor general and mrs schreyer everyone stood as the band played a salute then the national anthems of britain and canada s in the emotional and imposing ceremony which the three men faced the governor general and a huge portrait of queen elizabeth and prince philip to receive their awards a synopsis of the events which lead to the award was read and governor general schreyer pinned on the medal with its scarlet and blue ribbon in all three persons were awarded the star of courage and 25 men and women received the medal of bravery it was a long way and a long time from the tragic night in march 1980 when none of the three men had been re motely concerned with being brave or receiv- ing medals heroism all three men expressed pride in being so hon ored by their country but that night two years ago they were too in volved in trying to save the lives of three young people they received the congratulations of the governor general and mrs schreyer with dignity among the special guests invited to the ottawa ceremony were mrs gladys rolling vicechairman of the york regional police commission sinclair stevens mp york peel and ron stewart mp simcoe south york regional police chief bruce crawford was also invited but couldnt attend because of illness mr stevens and mr stewart expressed the pride of the community in seeing the three men receive their medals mrs rolling shared the same sentiments and expressed her plea sure in seeing a mem ber of the york region al police department wearing the mrsjschreyer mingled with the medal winners and their fami- lies and were able to ex press informally their pleasure in meeting them following the lun cheon guests were taken on a tour of otta wa and sawmost of the historical and notable sites of the city it was a long day for the medal winners and their families a day fil led with emotion and pride all three men told the tribune it was a day to remeriiber al ways a day being cana dian meant just a little more it was a day when the pride of the community and the country was re flected in the eyes of family and friends who were privileged to
