a4 the tribune wednesday may u 182 w couneil commente jim sanders how much was your beating bill this winter 1 i t- j gas and oil prices have been increasing outrageously over the past couple of years electricity prices have at least kept up with inflation even the cost of wood has sky rocketed there appears to be no way to overcome the high costs of heating it seems to me that all the talk at the provincial and federal levels about en couraging conservation is a lot of smoke but no fire what is needed is a concentrated effort to develop an alternative energy in dustry in ontario with bur weather and lack of fuel we are ideally located to encourage such an industry an alternative energy industry would develop methods of collecting energy from the sun and the wind and turning it into power or heat f many people are interested in developing alternative energy for their homes but are put off by the high cost of equipment this ex- pense would be drastically reduced if the equipment was mass produced local builders also would soon develop an ex pertise to reduce installation costs sadly there was no mention of support for such an industry in the recent budget from queens park for a 25 per cent share in siincor we are paying 650 million in 198182 the government of ontario borrowed 670 million from the teachers pension fund too bad we are pot putting that money toward an alternative energy industry in our new zoning bylaw for whit- churchstouffyille we will be encouraging energy conservation we will permit solar collectors to be excluded from height and minimum yard restrictions this will en courage individuals to experiment and develop solar energy equipment l we- will also be including a section for new developments that will protect solar access for individual lots this will mean your neighbors house will not cast a shadow on your home and thereby reduce your ability to collect solar energy however without provincial and federal leadership our local encouragement will be of little benefit to the individual homeowner now tfien weve had just a v minor problem regarding our wonderful magic festival sffcrwheelef xhetmuhe andrew p cook advertising here at the journey the transmission is all done with a newspaper no the three man editorial staff helping hand from ma bell isntplanning a mass march on metroland its ah occasion a lot more exciting than that on this date underlined in red on my calendar several weeks the tribune will be type- set entirely by computer an era in the history of local journalism i never thoughtid see while vdt may sound like some kind of victorious accomplishment that fact remains to be seenit standsfor videodisplay ter- initially i hoped id be spared this aggavation it all seemed so complicated i feared i couldnt cope howeveri now see it as a challenge arid believe it or not the components of this absolutely amazing system are now falling into place but im hot taking the credit instead i give full marks to mv instructor ivan has the patience of a modern day job hes repeated the operation so often he can make the unit minal of which we have two a personalized dance yet hes not adverse to explaining in we assume everyone knows a stouffville lady came into the office friday her purpose was serious is there a tennis club in town she asked we replied that there was at ballantrae is ballet taught here and if so when and where she enquired is there a judo club in the com munity- where does one go for badminton is there an archery club in town whos head of the swimming pool program and so on we later learned that the woman had as many of the answers as we but she was wanting to prove a point and she did you may know and i may know but how are newcomers in the area to know if theyre not aware of the right people to ask she continued- residents who have been around here for awhile know where to seek out such in formation but comparative strangers in our midst are confused they conclude that either we have nothing to offer or outsiders arent welcome neither of course is truer its just that we assume everyone knows- but they dont i the 1981 brochure published by the whitchurchstouffvillei chamber of- com merce provides somehelp but it doesnt go far enougha complete listing of all such services is required along with accompanying phone numbers j this could be a priority project of the towns new recreation coordinator and the recreation committee when compiled it should be printed in booklet form and mailed out to every homeowner and tenant in the municipality or published in the tribune whatever the committee decides right now new residents must feel theyre getting the runaround and they are but not intentionally its just that we take too much for granted unit for myself and one to be shared by- my confreres jim irving and jim holt- with the change deadline fast ap proaching each of us has been working feverishly to improve his skills admittedly theres been a good deal of nail biting- in the process the system by which well be operating extends further than most in that both stories and headings will be sent to the economist and sun at markham and then with the push of five keys on to the printing plant at 10 tempo avenue north york the stop over at markham gives us a back up in case the copy for reasons unknown goes astray on the next legof its laymans language details that any kin dergarterikid can recall still im proud of what i but never let it be said that point of a know -it- all that will neverbev even the pros tell me theyre continually discpyerings things that are newtime saving shortcuts they werent aware existed- at this stage i realize only too well that the crunch will come in two weeks and id better be ready the very thought of it brings tiny beads of perspiration to my brow for unlike the present where stories and headings are type set elsewhere the responsibility will rest squarely on three collective shoulders its deliver or else by jim thomas yes the4iair tearings just around the cornerbut even now minor problemshave arisenf for examplei cant practise at home nor will i be able to work there once we get going the computer although extremely compact is justtoo cumbersome to lug back and forth- in my car thismeans moretime spent at the office also should a power failure occur for any reason everything on the screen will be lost no recovery just gonethis will mean start- ing fresh perish the thought on a tuesday afternoon then theres the chance of errorrfailure bogged down on the party 1 check to seeif ifarrived simplehio it again v these are only a few of the what ifsv well be worrying about as vdt day api proaches v v j so please be patient and understanding it may be necessary to stand on your head to read the first computerized edition but thats not the worst that can happen black type turned inside out is difficult to discern on white newsprint if that happens you can catch my column in the punkey doodles corners gazette thats where ill be in my opinion my lawns a disaster area byjimholt- its tough to come back its strange how people yearn to excel at things they dont for me and i am pretty adept at most things my weakness is gar dening unfortunately i am not very good at it in fact to be honest im a disaster while my friends neighbors acquaintances produce vegetables what about pierre her horse she asked he can grow his own carrots i said by the time the conversation ended they had convinced me i should forget about a and vegetable garden for this year anyway and throwing a final verbal barb before win or lose in office or out municipal politics has cost markiiams ron moran a pile- i only he can know how much possibly as much as hes made- as a ward councillor undoubtedly one of the bestmarkhams ever had he responded to every complaint be it a hole in the road or street lighting improvement f the regional level a less personal position nothing really changed his newsletters mailed- out regularly to more- always tough for the town of marknam has than 60000 residents werepaid for out of his changed considerably in two years while close communication with the constituents was undoubtedly appreciated so also was the esteem held- for tony roman green finger becomes a brown thumb the markham saw no reason to cast one aside for minute i startin to plant sow prune or trim theother mayor roman was returned by a n has reached the stage where im now large majority convinced i could never make a living off the so now the same ron moran is ready to land flowers in a profusion that woutd make adam concluding the discussion my son trie the gardener beam with delight everything i engineer- observed why waste time you plant or sow has long disappeared by harvest know youre a disaster when it comes to time either the bugs have ravaged it or the growing anything neighbors dogs have dug it up my feathers ruffled i groping for a reply not that i dont try its just that my how about the back lawn i perfected down take another crack at the inner circle back again to regionalcouncil a level where n ioiii rin k rvm5n ham ic one evening over sunday dinner that i in- bu ll jjsl tended to put in a lot of veggies this year i own- pocket -few- politicians would even consider this kind of expense let alone follow it through however- for ron personal contact wasthe only way to go industrymore homes more people and on the surface at least more prosperity still theres a place forthe ron morans in any municipality- we wish him luck last year it turned but super its dying off observed the horselover what do you expect with a 200 pound st bernard using it as a racetrack and leaving his calling card every time he breaks from the broaching my ideas for improving the pen i replied anyway i intend to fertilize and give it plenty of water next weekend so it will be in perfect condition for our first bar becue i vv on the weekend i returned home with a couple of bags of fertilizer from canadian tire on special and lots of- enthusiasm- the i thought of fencing off the bottom part mystical figures 777 on the bag- had of the pasture and making a start there i something to do with the chemical content so replied y v i was told so there was no chance of me put in a lot of veggies this year twhere asked my daughter the horse lover- giving too much of one arid not enough of the other foolproof or so i thought grabbing an old spreader that had seen- better days i loaded it up and headed out unfortunately the spreader was rather rusty leaving little piles like molehills every other step never mirid those bits will be greener than the rest ithought although just in case i got a broom and swept it around a bit the- rest i spread by hand v within a week i saw signs of deterioration where was my lush green growth they promised on the bag little patches of brown spreading like cancer started to appear within days the place looked like the laun ching site of the apollo moon shot scorched and arid dinner last sunday was a stilted affair see did you o see you managed to ruin it all com mented the engineer what did you expect asked the horse- l lover hes been working on it fifteen years and he hasnt got it right yet 1 never mind dear comforted my wife well dig it all up and lay some sod it should be alrightthen until next year added the engineer s v-
