september 10 1981 board rejects expansion of lazy lake resort still fewer students durham region with the exception of pickering high school enrolment figures in durham area schools have no place to go but up claremont public school checked in with 260 students to start the new school year compared to 267 for the start of last year and 262 at the end of june at goodwood public school 256 children registered down 17 from last september but 14 higher than we an ticipated at the end of june according to principal richard hannah lots of people moving was cited at greenwoods valley view school for a drop in enrolment from 252 to 239 for the second year in a row uxbridge secondary school was both down and up in 1980 it started with 910 pupils compared to 917 the previous year however it finished with 886 just as it had done in 1979 the 886 closing figure last june also allowed it to show an increase this september when it recorded 896 new students pickering high school was up 94 this term with an enrolment of 1325 the school will take another attendance check at the end of the month uxbridge it looks as if lazy lake will continue to i live up to its name for the time being last week uxbridge planning board told spokesmen for the resort that it couldnt support their request for an additional 700 trailer sites there are 170 sites at the camp at present which is located at the uxbridge- stouffville townline on con cession 1 paul thouet one of two representatives for lazy lake resorts said the park turned away 200 to 300 people every day seeking accommodation and that was without facilities or advertising he said that government regulations allowed for 15 sites per acre and one park at port colbourne had 7500 sites lazy lake has 874 acres thouet said the individual sites at 35 feet by 70 feet would be larger than most also 25 per cent of the land would be left open for beach roads and recreation he said that because of the costs involved it was necessary to have the large number of sites his partner carl bointon said the company was creating the kind of resort advocated by durham region itself quoting from one of its brochures bointon noted that durham referred to itself as a vast playground where people can relax swim fish and camp councillor maustyn mcknight said he couldnt recall a camp with 700 sites i think theyre asking for more than they ever expect to get councillor gerri lynn oconnor said she wasnt against limited expansion but i dont think thexe is a need for 700 id like to hear comments from our planners first said councillor mac meyers a motion to that effect was made by councillor oconnor but board chairman sandy ewen interjected why submit it to the authorities if no one can sup port it he asked i think we should tell them what our position is the meeting agreed to send the matter to the planners for their comments adding that members feel the number of sites is excessive successful family reunion claremont members of the kayes family num bering close to 75 gathered for ditches for drainage uxbridge the ditches have it over the pumps so far where storm drainage is concerned for two proposed subdivisions in goodwood k that is they do in the opinion of two private engineering consultants marshall macklin monaghan ltd and totten sims hubicki associates ltd but not in the opinion of metropolitan toronto and region con servation authority in a report to planning board last week totten sims hubicki said it agreed with an earlier report from the first engineering firm that an open channel be considered as a suitable solution as a drainage outlet for goodwood pits development con cession 3 and mcguckin subdivision concession 2 the former is for 38 singlefamily units and the latter for 18 the company said that heavy rainfall and periods of high storm water runoff though infrequent can cause damage to the present pumping station damage would be increased by ad ditional development because of increased storm water quantities detention ponds would reduce the impact of extra storm water but would in crease flooding at any given storm if proper side slopes were constructed on the channel it along with construction of a controlled discharge weir would have sufficient storage questioned by trustee kindergarten plan capacity so that the flow into duffms creek would be within the mtrca requirements the report said cost of constructing the storm water outlet estimated at about 250000 would be shared by uxbridge township durham region mtrca the ministry of transportation and communications the developers and other ap propriate authorities in its report to the board mtrca said it preferred doubling the pump capacity a reunion aug 29 at the home of orval and marjorie fretz rr 3 claremont the the country in may claremont if high school students cant pick out their own courses with any success how can kindergarten children that anyway is the way linda carder claremont representative on durham board of education looks at the proposed new entry in the early childhood identification program the latter as proposed by marilyn adams primary junior consultant for the board would give prekindergarten children some participation in deciding whether they should play pickup sticks all year or concentrate more on the abcs allowing children to make decisions is simply a prelude to their later lives when there are many decisions to be made according to adams giving mem that power will help them work as individuals as well as get along with other children she says adams doesnt agree with the argument that children will only take the subjects they want and will be denied a wider education teachers wont be ab dicating their authority there are still certain things the children will be forced to do and at specific times she said its necessary they have math and english for exam ple but they should be able to decide how to set their pace she said the program is aimed at the individual student there is no passing or failing she said i hope that doesnt reflect durhams total philosophy says trustee carder mrs carder said that all durham children are given a test before starting school something the region itself initiated but which is now a provincial prerequisite the test checks such things as the childs ability to stack blocks choose or differentiate colors recognize letters catch a ball skip rope use a pair of scissors and others mrs carder said however she added some children through their par ticipation in sesame street et al come to school more ad vanced than others this means splitting the class into various groups with the teacher gearing the program to those at the top if students are so ad vanced its wrong to hold them back she says it bores them stupid however she has reser vations about children being allowed too much freedom in their choice of subjects i dont think it will fly too well in the face of the board is the way she puts it if they cant do it in high school how can they do it now if theyre just talking about pick up sticks versus stacking blocks thats one thing she says but when it comes to standard classroom subjects its quite another whatever the thinking the matter has still to be settled but it will come a bit closer to that realization when the board meets this week t refurbished 1 940 hudson turns heads
