2 the tribune thursday august 27 1m1 wildlife birdproof windows byroareld making your yard a haven for birds can be a joyful hobbyall year round a procession of bright flowers berry- producing shrubs and wellstocked bird feeders enlivens more and more yards across ontario but these attractions can bring hazards for our feathered friends as well every year the federation of ontario naturalists receives enquiries about how to stop the toll of migratory birds killed by flying into picture windows adjacent to at tractive gardens birds seem to be attracted to these windows for two reasons if a pane of glass reflects the trees and shrubbery around it an unwary bird can attempt to fly through this mirror image sometimes in breeding season a male bird persists in attacking his reflection to oust this intruder creating a frenzied fluttering that is more annoying than dangerous in many cases windows are arranged in passageways or living rooms so that a clear view appears right through the house creating a dangerous illusion for small birds if you have problem windows in your house you may have to experiment to find the best solution hanging objects that tinkle or glitter such as strips of foil or wind chimes will often deter birds from a window light seethrough screening or mesh can prevent dangerous reflections or cushion the blow of approaching birds parallel strands of fishing line strung several inches apart from the frame also works well some homeowners report success with lifesize silhouettes of birds of prey attached inside the window this ap parent predator will make small songbirds more cautious about ap proaching at high speeds using any reputable field guide as a model the construction of suitable cardboard silhouettes could provide an en tertaining rainyday activity for your kids and help our bird life as well we- tribune thats what i said history repeats itself wht wrihum barrebeacock advertising manager i established 1888 james thomas charles h nolan musselmans lake has made available for public use one of the finest recreation areas in ontario at nominal cost thousands upon thousands of weekend visitors have utilized this service most from metro toronto the sites aplus rating is recognized across the province as well as distant points in the usa in recent times vern and audrey davies could have been content to rest on their laurels and accept whatever tourist trade might come their way but that has never been their custom rather they have con tinued to expand facilities and improve the property making it the attractive site we know today now mr and mrs davies in touch with the times wish to close off their park to the public so as to better accommodate present and future trailer residents theyve earned this privilege while there have been rumblings of concern over the change we see it hurting relatively few rather the benefits far out weigh the drawbacks particularly for business people in stouffville we hope the davies carry their idea through to a successful conclusion that cedar beach goes private and the trailer park ex pands stouffville couldnt wish for better neighbors await ministrys decision all eyes and ears of whitchurch- stouffville residents are trained on the provincial environment ministry in an ticipation of a decision soon related to ex pansion of york sanitations controversial landfill site a reply is expected in october the ministry finds itself in a tough spot on one side a multinational corporation and on the other an urban community whose very existence is at stake we the people know the stand government should take outright rejection of the ex pansion application stouffville will settle for nothing less however should the ministry bow to big business as has occurred in the past it will be forever suspect in the eyes of the local elec torate this is a church oriented passive com munity we tend to turn the other cheek but this time weve had our fill our fill of toronto garbage that poses a threat to health right now a lull has settled in as the town awaits a decision the storm will follow if expansion is allowed voices heard cant move city hall dont you believe it two instances where the voice of the people has been heard came to light this week the one relates to the hazardous in tersection on hwy 48 at davis drive mayor eldred king says this corner will be properly illuminated in 1982 a project to be assumed by the region the other pertains to the bloomington road from warden avenue through to woodbine in all likelihood york regional council will approve a reduced speed limit from 70 to 60 kilometers per hour why because the people spoke out and were heard youre never too old to learn they say and the past two holiday weeks have been a real learning experience for me first off the time away from work let me become reacquainted with my kids too often it seems they must play second fiddle to my typewriter a terrible admission but very true so while i have my nose buried in newsprint my wife gets to carry the load a responsibility she shoulders without com plaint realizing i had considerable catching up to do i attempted to cram twelve months of the past and twelve months of the future into fourteen days of the present and it worked we had a great time day trips included visits to wonderland at maple- the slide ride at collin gwood dinosaur valley near elm vale the marine railroad at midhurst pucks farm and the kortright conservation area near kleinburg and other interesting places all within a few hours drive of stouffville for a first time i bowed to my wifes wishes that we not drive hundreds of miles to a singular destination but instead remain close to home she was right the kids had a ball and so did we but it wasnt all fun and games we managed to mix a little business in with the pleasure and this we hope will result in benefits for the future in short we enrolled son barry in shaws college toronto he begins sept 8 wlule barrys still somewhat ap prehensive about the deal were not not after visiting the school on two separate occasions and seeing firsthand their allbusiness ap proach to positions and careers while perhaps a trifle pushy as parents sometimes are we see it as tie only way to go and were certain our son will too once he gets involved were hoping so my attitude in this regard may be all wrong but in barry i see a reflection of myself thirtyone years ago fresh out of high school i too filled out countless ap plication forms without success just as he has done so to qualify for a specialized line of work i enrolled in a business college ad mittedly the best move i ever made it can open countless doors barrys greatest fear we believe is a firstday revelation that hes the only boy in an allgirl class a kind of onion in a petunia patch while such a situation never bothered his father i was the only boy in class hell probably die a thousand deaths should such a fate occur however staff instructor bill devitt has given hint a verbal guarantee this wont happen anyway two other males wrote the registration test this helped a little to say im sold on shaws is an under statement i was impressed from the moment i stepped in the door a private yet personal efficiency that excited us both while run off his feet in dealing with a deluge of applications instructor devitt took extra time to explain the benefits of various courses the time schedules and costs barrys choice is business management from september through november hell concentrate on typing salesmanship and personal development to these can be added accounting business machines business organization communications human relations law mathematics and secretarial procedures the full course extends over a period of 2v4 semesters or about twelve months barry will commute using markham transit and the subway s a shaws course may seem costly 2800 for the one wed like barry to take however there are fees for singular subjects if that is the students wish but lets face it my wife and i said to each other how does one place a price on quality career training the answer is you cant and you dont not when a sons or daughters future is at stake so to parents in a quandry similar to ours two weeks ago give shaw colleges serious consideration theyre all business editors mail lives versus dollars dear editor i was always led to believe that god was in heaven but reading ted shaws letter in the tribune on july 30 confused me he talks of bloomington road being vour road of truckers who wont adhere to a speed restriction regardless of the number of tickets handed out by police and of being forced to break the law either he represents a most irresponsible group who consider themselves to be above the law or he has missed the point of the argument simply stated we parents are concerned for our lives and the lives of our children in the face of a growing and increasingly reckless attitude on behalf of the truckers who want just one more load and speed recklessly to get it so what if someone gets killed gotta get one more load is human life so cheap that it can be bargained for one more load is the 8000 sufficient com pensation for the loss of a childs life or if a school bus is rammed by a truck going too fast to stop in time are the many lives that will be sacrificed needlessly ample reward for one more load for the king of the road i echo mayor kings remarks in the same issue ie the school the point is its there and we must deal with it whitchurch highlands is the only school in york county on a regional road with an inflated speed zone of 70 kph yes we parents are concerned to reduce the speed limit before a tragedy forces council to do so our petition to the roads committee had 197 signatures some from truckers and not the 96 reported also mr bowes trustee of the school board endorsed in writing our petition for a reduced speed limit others are as concerned as we who live in the bloorrlington road area we the parents are not attempting to deprive ted shaw and his fellow truckers of their livelihood we are asking that he recognize in his attitude that all taxpayers have equal rights and access to his road and also that we want our kids to grow up too- just like his kids and not be snuffed out under the wheels of a speeding truck safety is our common concern his and ours a start is to reduce the speed limit and secondly have the truckers respect the limit and avoid the needless fatality that otherwise will surely occur ted shaw if you had your child playing on or near bloomington road wouldnt you drive by just a little slower the life you save may be your own sincerely edward chorostecki rr 1 gormley road work overdue dear mr thomas i am amazed at all the fuss over construction work now going on in the area of island lake i feel im as environmentally conscious as the next guy but there comes a time when common sense must prevail the present cow trail that some people may call a road has been in need of reconstruction for years in fact its been talked about for years but nothing more just talk now at long last the region of durham has made a start in correcting a very hazardous situation i hope the politicians will see this work through to a satisfactory conclusion and turn a deaf ear to those who bemoan the fact that a little progress is at long last coming to this area i predict that once this work is finished the most vocal critics will be praising the improvement sincerely victor mcarthur rr 3 stouffville
