4 the tribune thursday august 1ss1 len and helen bnckland were up at 430 am to watch the royal wedding on tv marvellous said len sooperdooper agreed helen jim thomas editors mail viarail costly dear mr thomas- i wish to comment on the proposed can cellation of viarail while a few in stouffville may scream and holler the truth of the fact is for the number of commuters to and from toronto daily its nof being used by very many people on thursday there were 22 passengers on friday there were eleven jthere are several reasons for this first unless one works in the heart of downtown toronto the tram goes nowhere whats a person supposed to do when be or she arrives at the union station second the com muters not the most reliable transportation in the world on several occasions including friday its been late this means in many cases office workers are also late once burned twice wary some people including myself wont take the chance third despite gasoline and parking costs theres something about the independence of a car one can come and go as be likes fourth stouffville just doesnt have the population to support this type of service ii for one do not believe commuter service on this line will be i cancelled not en tirely but i believe it will be reduced i think the end of the line will be markham rather than stouffville then if warranted it will be extended we most canadians continually cry the blues over government spending then when the government decides to cut back we cry even more we cant have it both ways ill continue to use viarail as long as it runs when it stops ill find other means maybe in the months ahead therell be suf ficient growth here to warrant it being con tinued t v sincerely dennis mcleod albert street stouffville our loss k dear mr thomas- the proposed cancellation of vtarail on the toronto- stouffville line concerns those people who use it consistently y when the govern ment talks about losses the total over a lengthy period of time appears staggering however what transportation service operated by govern ment isnt i doubt if theres a passenger line anywhere in canada that pays its way all or most must be subsidized by government at some level v if the ticket price was raised to put the torontostouffville line on a breakeven basis the cost per passenger would be prohibitive if no one could afford to use it the end result would be the same- withdrawal of the service how much is via- rail worth to com munities like stouffville markham and unlon- vflle thats what the government must decide then weigh it against current losses at a time when commuter service is being encouraged it seems strange to me that a cutback is being considered sincerely david mcintosh rupert avenue stouffville bureaucratic devastation dear jim once again we must witness the devastation devised by bureaucrats to seemingly justify the existence of their jobs what possible reasoning could lead to the con clusion that making part of island lake into a potential breeding ground for mosquitoes and in the bargain destroying some beautiful trees could ever be worthwhile all that would seem to be gained would be to make the road a little more acceptable for speeders by making the curves a little less sharp this will mean more policing even more road signs and the invitation to use more fuel by encouraging faster driving it seems every year the average citizen sees a little more of the democratic process slipping out of his hands and into the hands of nameless government employees some of whom often seem to be singularly lacking in common sense it would be in teresting to see if the people responsible for this decision to spend what is rumoured to be between one quarter and one half a million dollars on this project would make themselves known to the long- suffering taxpayer sincerely clarion baker rrzstoiirfrme was sooperdooper stouffville len and helen buckland main street east arent usually on the go at 430 in the morning however july 29 was an exception the marriage of prince charles and lady diana an exceptional event indeed millions watched the show via the media of television however for len and helen it was more than that much more for len while a canadian and proud of it is a native of yorktown frimley a borough twentyfive miles from london helens roots are in new cross only seven miles away they were married in england and came to canada in 1943 i didnt miss a bit of it i even watched the replays until one oclock the next mor ning helen said she described the ceremony and the procession that followed as super- dcoper marvellous said len a real eve helen f admitted fairytale feelings of nos as eo- siji rehved memories hffifu cwmhood v btomfliartobofcsob len said he liked the ttejujaroundti here that know the parade route ftgnat- everyone like the backof my ilz absolutely the ame j 0 nothing chained stol erkfrezsjit thit t despite the fact millions of- people lined the street- i never saw a thing out of place len said the ceremony so lifted his spirits i walked up to the office and paid the bydro bill and never took my cane nothings changed still as beautiful as ever said hda len described the architecture in st pauls as out of this world television cameras he said brought out the sculp ture even better than the eye editors mail talent here dear editor i was pleased to read in lasttweeks issue of the tribune that two of our local junior ball players quivers now with agiaeourt i surely with a nudeos of such top performers sthis i town could have put are i representing together one the tndya dubsmtheprovinc underwood and brad steel this will bean event in their lives theyll never forget the only thing bothering me is the fact both these boys are playing in oshawa and not in stouffville and the same goes for jim maybeieven good enough to have gone to thunder bay stouffville it seems has a habit of brmeing along good athletes to a certain level then turning them loose to catch positions elsewhere although three players dont con stitute a team they represent a good start three boys to build a team around in future i would suggest that stouffville work a little harder towards keeping its talent in town rather than waving- them goodbye at the peak of their athletic careers sincerely fred jensen rr3stoofhule holdup man held by police ballantrae a 23 year old
