those many busy intersections throughout the region and a friendly and familiar face finally waves you through dont question the thought youve seen that face before even if youre just as sure you dont know the policemen behind it because more than likely you have in fact youve probably seen that cop down the road from him too for underneath those hats of blue are two prominent stouffville citizens who when away from their regular business duties in town like to double as part of york regions finest the pair are trucker david hineman and postmaster gary fisher just two of the 22 people 15 men and seven women who make up the yearold york auxiliary police force they began their 32- week training period last august and graduated this may fully qualified to take on many of the tasks of a regular police officer and except for a checkered hat band and the absence of a service revolver at their side are very much the picture of one as well very pleased wed been looking at it starting a force for some time says york deputy police chief bob hood theyre common on other forces and we felt one would help here and so far it has helped be says were very pleased the members supplement the regular police officers in such duties as traffic and crowd control boat patrol in the lakes and if they want can even join police in their regular squad car duties deputy hood said the regular training period continues even after members are hired with refresher courses in areas of traffic control and other duties the course itself consists of eight hours a month with classes every two weeks in richmond hill qualifications for the most part are the same as those required for regular police duty the chief differences are in education and eyesight requirements challenge both fisher and hineman joined because of the challenge and the chance to perform a civic duty mrs john may i dont belong to any service dubs so i thought this would be a good idea says dave besides i was always interested in being a policeman dave says he still is too and is thinking seriously about it the move would require some more schooling says the 30yearold hineman a father of two fisher says hed be a little too old for regular duty and finds he gets just the right taste of the life in his supplementary role theres always that element of i wanted to be a cop in everyone and this is the closest i could get to it he says he adds that he wanted to find out what was going on on the other side of the coin wideefrect fisher also likens the force to a service club but thinks it has a more farreaching ef fect because of the wide area covered in the region were told were there for the public to use us and for us to help the public he says so far both they and public find it a muturally satisfying role funeral service was conducted in goodwood baptist church on wednesday afternoon of this week for mrs john may the former dora wagg of stouffville and widow of the late john wagg she
