the tribune thursday march 30 1978 11 bears win super tourney the neil patrick polar bears travelled to markham last week for the rotary club annual super novice tour nament and brought home two championship trophies in the b division with eight teams com peting the polar bears won their first game in a convincing 70 win over bramalea it was clearly a team effort as shown by the goal scoring and shut out for goalie bruce fifieldhot on the goal scoring were bill butler paul sinclair two tim evans daryl may kirk smythe and mike ferguson assists went to kirk smythe mike ferguson darren stevens lee vautier daryl may two and ron lewis in the second game against markham the polar bears downed their opponents 62 in an ex citing game goalie bruce fifield played another good game between the posts making some fine stops goals for the game were scored by tim evans two sean mcquigge kirk arends daryl may two assists went to kent smythe tim evans and russ beaton in the final round the polar bears faced the oshaua red wings and captured the b championship trophy with a 42 score goalie bruce fifield was hot stopping many shots on net the first period remained scoreless and it wasnt until late in the second that the polar bears notched their first goal of the game captain tim evans in his sweeping style scored a hat trick putting the bears well ahead on the score sheet assists went to russ beaton lee vautier and paul sin clair sean mcquigge scored the other goal unassisted with four minutes left to play and in a desperate attempt to stay in the game oshawa scored followed by another goal with 48 seconds left in the game with the b division trophy won the polar bears faced the bowmanville a champions in a fast skating and exciting grand championship game the bears took a two goal lead on scores by tim evans from sean mcquigge in the first period and then daryl may from kent smythe and bill butler in a goal mouth scramble at the start of the second the winning goal came on a well executed passing play from sean mcquigge to mike ferguson who sent daryl may in on the bowmanville goalie bowmanville pulled their goalie in the final minutes but stouffville held on to game was played in stouffville and the local boys played a perfect game of fore and back checking defensive work and goal tending for their championship winning 20 victory chris doyle opened the scoring on a fine shot after a pass from ken burrows stouffville held that 10 lead until the final period with stouffville short handed jeff stover poked the puck away from an uxbridge player deep in the uxbridge end jeff then raced in front of the net and slid the puck under the startled goalie for stouffvilles insurance marker after the game the boys were presented with a team trophy and in tied until the last 30 seconds of the period when borden again jumped into the lead the third period saw plenty of end to end action with numerous scoring chances with a minute left in the game goalie al fockler came out of the net in favour of the sixth attacker and although our boys had the op portunities it was bor dens don gebhardt who picked up a stray pass and scored into the empty net to give them the game and series the fourth game of the series was a total washout for stouffville as they came up very flat losing 71 the lone goal was put in by glen dobson the team of bryan todd barry smith brent barton tim yeomans mark murphy peter sinclair glen dobson tim mcneil howard parent rick ewing john p harold mike glenn craig corner and goalies al fockler and charlie minaker have played good clean hockey all year and should be proud of their accomplishment mike edward ted brunt and goalie wayne stevens also dressed for the series a special salute to the sponsor and coach john edwards
