t wht wrthum thursday march t 1iis edge pt hope 21 clippers lead playoff series the ken may clip- they finally decided pen are currently out in start playing to front but just barely in their semifinal series with port hope they lead the series two games to one in the best of five the first game was played last week in stouffville and it was the play of goalie brad steel stopping 41 shots that kept the may boys in the game until stouffville won 43 but not before port hope gave them a lot of work port jumped out to a 21 lead in the first their first goal coming when the clipper defence just stood around watching the port player walk in to score it was 20 after terry watt scored off a rebound of a brad steel save perry brown closed the gap to one off a pass from mike wbelan and geoff roy l the second period had each team scoring once both while owen heise was serving a hooking penalty perry browns second goal of the night was a sborthanded effort headhunters 9 battle says hockey parent dear sir my question is what is happening to our national- sport called hockey this past weekend i travelled to eastern ontario as my youngest son is a member of the stouffville peewee hockey team that is in the l quarterfinals with gananoque the peewee game was played late on saturday in gananoque and i had made plans to stay over night so that my family might become familiar with the city of kingston during our trip our plan also in cluded a stop in napanee on our return as the stouffville bantams had a sunday afternoon game in that town on entering the st marks girls win championship the st marks girls showed the boys theyre not the only ones that can win tournaments as the female basketball team swept through to the b championship held recently v the boys won their basketball tourney and the girls didnt want to be shown up the girls went through the tourney undefeated beating st patrick 43 knocking off st anthonys 192 clobbering st joseph 16- 4 and shut out our lady of anunciation 220 the girls capped their incredible season of 130 with the tourney the team consists of barbara van maris i carrie burd mary guest mary mcdermott jackie hulshof cathy oconnor margaret oconnor cecilia tomari anna delito and ron prieur coach napanee area three of our group met one of the coaching staff from napanee and during a brief discussion he made a statement that quote the stouffville team would be lucky to leave here alive and that his team did nothing on friday night in stouff ville all i can say after having watched the game is i really think that he was dead serious when he made the earlier statement i have understood in the past that a hockey stick was to be used to control the puck not the opposing player i believe very strongly that all of us who are involved in any way in the game of hockey fans players coaches officials and executives had better take a good look at ourselves and analyze our motive the game which was once an art of finesse and puck control is fast becoming a battle of hunters on a breakaway pass by geoff roy however 30 seconds later port was out in front again on their power play the tying goal came from bill meakes in the third when he picked up a doug taylor pass from andy leitch captain ted assinck won the game on his great goal after howie jones picked off a steve schell pass went around the net and passed it out to ted the second game of the series was played in port hope and although the clippers came out like lions they were mauled by the panthers 74 the clippers jumped to a 20 lead in the first period on goals by glen gibson from bill meakes and perry brown the second score by tim quinn from mike whelan and perry just as it seemed that stouffville might blow port hope out of the rink the port team was able to drastically turn their game around in the second period port ex ploded for six goals past brad steel the first two in the opening minute as the clipper offense and defense collapsed stouffville picked up two goals in the third but it was too little too late howie jones from andy leitch and tim quinn and perry brown from bill meakes and geoff roy collected the points catchup hockey was the call in the third game a match that saw the clippers play their hearts out all night and finally came up with an exciting 106 overtime win with port hope opening the scoring it meakes and doug taylor that tied it up port took a 21 lead but bill meakes replied shortly after with doug taylor and owen heise assisting to end the first in the second port was back at it taking a 4- 2 lead within the first period but the sever say die clippers again tied it up on goals by perry brown and steve kirkland glen gibson mike whelan ted assinck and howie jones assisted this seesaw battle entered the third period and port of course took the lead another two goal margin it looked like the dippers might not be able to come back but at the 12 minute mark andy leitch from doug taylor closed the gap to 65 with andy leitch in the penalty box geoff roy fed a breakaway pass to tim quinn who put in a great shorthanded goal to tie up the game for the final time in the overtime period it was all stouff ville as they scored twice in the first rute by steve schell from howie jones and ted assinck then andy leitchs hat trick from doug taylor and bill meakes steve kirklands shot from the point was put in by ted assinck for a 96 lead and the final goal of the game was scored by steve schell on a pass from howie jones the clippers have lost terry brown for at least one game maybe more from a knee injury he suffered in the game the next game in the series was played last tuesday march 7 and the player sprawled out on the ice is doing his best to stop his opponent in recent atom house jeague play however the player in white was able to get free and take a good clean shot on net although he failed to score the house league is now preparing itself for the upcoming playoffs bantams lead napanee the don anderson bantams have drawn first and second blood in their quarter final series against napanee the best of five series opened up last week with stouffville eagerly awaiting the chance to avenge an earlier 73 loss at the hands of napanee in the silver stick tour nament the first game saw the anderson crew come out flying and hitting which seemed to throw off the napanee attack mike rehill made several fine saves to keep stouffville alive until normanmckenzie fired in two quick goals for the bantams tony herold scored the third and final goal to was clipper fockler dave mehaffey and daryl paxton controlled the play so effectively that napanee could not muster scoring threats iri the third period however credit for the win should go to the entire team for a solid twoway effort in the always important first game the second match was played in napanee last sunday and it promised to be a brusing affair from the start kevin barry got the nod to start in goal for stouffville and his steady work proved to be a large part in the andersons 52 victory x thestory of the game however was the work of defenceman robt gierkink and centre kevin bartley the big rearguarder logged a tremendous amount of ice time and took a lot of punishment from the chippy napanee for wards and kevin was a one man wrecking crew for the anderson squad as he scored a three goal hattrick and with a little more luck could have had three more his skating and stickhandling gave napanee fits and they had to resort to some cheap penalties to stop him tony herold picked up the other two goals in the win and once again the whole team just played their hearts out the next game in the series is tonight thurs day in napanee at 830 and the fourth if necessary will be back in stouffville this friday at 8 pm 4 caged head peewee a playoffs sincerely clarence fockler trounced gananoque 42 since ousting port hope from the playoff scene in the opening round three weeks ago playoff series number two stouffville is pitted against a strong team from gananoque which ousted napanee in the first game played in gananoque last saturday our boys showed the effect of the long layoff between playoff games and were trailing by one goal near the end of the first period however the team found its legs in the final period and skated to a wellearned 42 win captain bryan todd was just too much for the opposing team to handle in this game he scored three spectacular goals all of which handcuffed the gananoque goalie the fourth goal was scored by craig corner on a wellplayed shot from the point bryans linemate barry smith picked up two assists- and brent barton and tim yeomans one each al fockler played a good game in goal and the defence exhibited strong play as well
